Headline from nypost.com: “MTA wasting $1M to study ‘psychology’ of fare beaters — as agency cries poverty, pushes for congestion pricing.” Two-point report: free ride, cheap thrill.
From NYP, interesting news out of Tokyo: “This city is offering 4-day workweeks to young couples — for extra time to procreate.” I’d thought it was bursting at the seams. Give us more taxpayers!
How sweet it is! Headline from foxnews.com: “ABC and Stephanopoulos apologize to Trump and pay massive amount in defamation fallout.”
I break my pro sports silence for this insane FN headline about Marshall University: “College football team opts out of bowl game after nearly 30 players head to transfer portal.” Yes, major college football is a pro sport. The Thundering Herd finished 10–3 and won the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The team was scheduled to play Army in the Independence Bowl.
From FN: “Woman finds mushroom twice the size as her head, feeds family for a week.”
From 36 Random Bits of STEM Trivia (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) That Technically Count As Reading a Book by Jesse at msm.com: In 2011 NASA voted Gattaca (1997) as the best and most likely to happen sci-fi flick. I remember being lukewarm about it and a friend scoffing because I’d complained most modern sci-fi wasn’t geared toward adults. Maybe it was over my head, as Inception (2010) and Interstellar (2014) were. I enjoyed and understood Gravity (2013) and Arrival (2016). I don’t recall any of Gattaca. It’s rated 7.7 on a scale of ten at IMDb. I guess I should give it another go. Here’s a Googled plot synopsis: “In a future society in the era of indefinite eugenics, humans are set on a life course depending on their DNA. Young Vincent Freeman is born with a condition that would prevent him from space travel, yet is determined to infiltrate the GATTACA space program.” It stars Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who would soon marry and bang out two kids before divorcing after six years. My all-time favorite sci-fi film is Blade Runner (1982). Blade Runner 2049 was over my head. Photo from Google Images, Uma & Ethan in character:
Good return for the Anti-Inflation Book Shop on this beautiful but cold day. My thanks to the woman who overcompensated me for Cooking Light Annual Recipes 2004, and to the one who bought Killing Patton by Bill O’Reilly & Martin Dugard; and to the one who purchased 3D art; and to Cabbie, who did a swap and buy of paperback thrillers; and to Amazon for sending a royalty for an ebook sale of By the Numbers to my bank account. I hope it’s not the last, although lately…
