RIP superb NFL WR Golden Richards, 73, who succumbed to congestive heart failure. Born in Utah, he was All-State in football, basketball and track in high school. He attended Brigham Young for three years and excelled as a kick and punt returner. Although he led the Cougars in receptions, the team was run-oriented. He transferred to the University of Hawaii for his senior season and was doing well until a knee injury derailed him. Dallas selected him in the second round, the 46th pick overall, of the 1973 draft. He played six years for the Cowboys and caught a TD pass in the team’s Super Bowl XII victory over the Broncos. He was traded to the Bears, had a career high 27 receptions in ’78, then was injured in the fifth game of the following season, effectively ending his career. Overall, he had 122 receptions and 17 TDs. After his playing career, he hosted ESPN Outdoors, a hunting and fishing show. Unfortunately, he had substance abuse problems and was divorced three times. I’m embarrassed that I’ve learned of an important historical figure long after an article in the Washingtonian by Katie McCabe, a 2003 PBS documentary and a 2004 HBO movie. Vivien Thomas, the son of a carpenter, no formal education beyond high school, went to work as a medical lab assistant at Vanderbilt and moved on to Johns Hopkins with his mentor, where he eventually served as supervisor of the surgical laboratories and became an Instructor of Surgery for its School of Medicine. Married from 1933 until his death at 75 in 1985, he was a father of two. His autobio was published just days after his passing. Facts from Wiki, photo from GI:
Today’s session of the Anti-Inflation Book Shop was surprising. Contrary to the forecast, it was not blustery, and the sun came out halfway through the proceedings, providing enough warmth to keep me out of the car and allowing me to schmooze with passersby. Sam was amped about his beloved Mets’ first spring training game broadcast. My thanks to the gentleman who donated a ton of Israeli CDs, and to the old-timer who bought four, and to Wolf, who purchased a bunch to disperse to relatives; and to the senior citizen who took home vinyl recordings of Oklahoma and Silk Stockings; and to the young man who chose a Dinah Washington compilation; and to the young woman who selected The Hero Code: Lessons Learned from Lives Well Lived by Admiral William H.
