Grim Tidings
The blog is largely downbeat today. Too often bad news overwhelms the good. There was no way around it on this otherwise fine day. One must remind oneself that outside of politics life in America is damn good.
Sadly, three people have jumped to their deaths from the Verrazano Bridge in less than a month, according to an article in the NY Post. There’s talk about building tall fences to prevent it. Is it specifically the VB that is attractive to these tormented folks, ala the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, or will the troubled simply move to an alternate site?
Everyone is familiar with the iconic photo of the young man staring down the tank during the Tianneman Square protests. Here’s an alternative one Chinese officials don’t want anyone to see. Although shot from a distance, the carnage is obvious:
From 1976–2002 Linda Fairstein was a Manhattan ADA and head of the Sex Crimes Unit of the County of New York. She oversaw the Central Park Jogger case, which was prosecuted by two other ADA’s. She has been under assault for a while now and the barrage has intensified since the airing of the opening episode of the Netflix series When They See Us, which is based on the convictions and subsequent exonerations of five teens in the 1989 rape. She describes the series as “grossly and maliciously inaccurate.” She has resigned from several non-profit charitable boards to end the insane boycotts against them. DNA evidence exonerated the accused five of rape but not of what was referred to as “wilding” back in the day. Why is this occurring? This morning radio talk show host Mark Simone speculated it is the beginning of an effort to tar President Trump, who took out a general ad in the four most popular NYC papers in response to the mayhem that was occurring. After the 2014 settlement that awarded $40 million to the five, Trump said: “Speak to the detectives on the case and try listening to the facts. These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels.” I would be very surprised if, once the barrage begins, he backs down. Anyone hoping for a civil campaign in 2020 will be gravely disappointed. Here’s a pic of the ad:
It was a quiet day at the floating book shop. My thanks to the gentleman who bought a book on money matters, the only sale of the day; and to the one who did a four-for-one swap of non-fiction; and to Tanya, who donated a mix of works in Russian and English; and to all the folks who stopped to chat.
