Headlines & Stuff

Telling headline at nypost.com: “Dante de Blasio made $650 a week working for dad’s doomed presidential campaign.” If Red Billy had made it all the way to the White House, he could have gotten the Ukraine or China to appoint his son to an energy board of directors. Then he would have had to face questions from other candidates in his party — but not the mainstream media — out for his job at the 2024 presidential debates. Who in politics is not guilty of such shenanigans?… And here’s a headline showing more TDS: “Trump policies, racism may cause some black women’s weight problems, professor says.” I guess it’s meaningless that black unemployment is at an all-time low. Then again, she’d credit Obama.

Bryce Harper is a great baseball player, but appears to be boorish, insufferable. The Phillies opened the vault for him, a 13-year $330 million contract, hoping he’d lead them to the promised land. Instead, his former team, the Nationals, is the one going to the World Series. I find that so satisfying.

Here’s a list of interesting stuff:
Hot water will turn into ice faster than cold water.
The Mona Lisa has no eyebrows.
The sentence: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” uses every letter in the English language.
Ants rest for around eight minutes in a twelve hour period. (Obviously, they’re not politicians.)
“I Am” is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.
The most common name in the world is Mohammed.
When the moon is directly overhead, you will weigh slightly less.
Camels have three eyelids to protect them from the blowing desert sand.
There are two credit cards for every person in the United States.
TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters on one row of the keyboard.
Minus 40 degrees Celsius is exactly the same as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. (Huh?)
Women blink nearly twice as much as men.
You can’t kill yourself by holding your breath.
It is impossible to lick your elbow. (How many have tried after reading it at a Facebook post?)
The Guinness Book of Records holds the record for being the book most often stolen from Public Libraries.
People say “Bless you” when someone sneezes because the heart stops for a millisecond.
It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky. (Or to fly)
The “sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick” is said to be the toughest tongue twister in the English language. (Way harder than Six Thick Thistles Sticks, one of Sonny Fox’s staples on Wonderama back in the day.)
“Rhythm” is the longest English word without a vowel. (Don’t mean a thing as long as it’s got that swing.)

My thanks to Mother Nature, who delayed the storm long enough to allow a full session of the floating book shop. And thanks also to the burly young man who bought a travel guide to Italy, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, The Black Echo by Michael Connelly, and two Robert Ludlum novels, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Prometheus Deception; and to the woman who overcompensated me for three Belva Plain novels: Evergreen, Treasures and Blessings; and to the woman who chose three books in Russian; and to the gentleman who selected How the Other Half Lives by Jacob Riis; and to the woman who opted for two kids’ books.
