RIP pro football mainstay Eddie Meador, 86. Born in Dallas, a three-sport star in high school, he did the same at Arkansas Tech, also playing basketball and running track. He rarely left the gridiron in college, playing RB, DB and kick-returner, and was named to the First Team Little All-American squad in 1958. He was drafted in the seventh round, 80th pick, of the ’59 NFL draft by the L.A. Rams, for whom he played his entire career, retiring in ‘70. He was First-Team All-Pro twice, second three times. He was selected to six Pro Bowls. He was named to the 1960’s All-Decade Team. He had 46 interceptions, 22 fumble recoveries and ten blocked kicks, all team records that still stand. He scored five TD’s. After football he sold real estate and went into the jewelry design business with his wife. He was a father of six. Awesome, Sir. Photo from Google Images:
On Monday I received a call from my pulmonologist’s service, telling me the doctor wanted to discuss my recent, second cat scan. I feared it was bad news. My hand shook as I signed in this morning. Six months later, no change. He could have said that over the phone. Maybe he can’t resist the easy money of billing Medicare for such visits. Put in perspective, it’s good news, so I have nothing to gripe about.
Another gem from the Staten Island goombah:
The floating book shop opened a half hour later than usual. Since I’d had to give up the perfect parking spot and had to haul wares about 25 yards on this blazing hot day, I decided to display half as much stuff. My thanks to The Quiet Man, who bought the DVD set of the entire Soap series; and to the Frenchman, who purchased Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design by Michael F. Ashby and Kara Johnson; and to the lovely young woman with the bulging pregnancy who took home Dark Paradise by Tami Hoag and a book in Russian; and to my Constant Benefactress, who selected A Suitable Vengeance by Elizabeth George.
