Ice Cream & More
It’s National Ice Cream Day, photo from foxnews.com:
Too good to be true? Headline from nypost.com: “‘Fountain of Youth’ pill: Harvard researchers have found age reversing chemicals.”
An oddity. The other day I mentioned to Steve, a retired salesman, that the “Check Engine” light was on in my car. He told me to make sure the gas cap was as tight as possible the next time I filled up. Lo and behold! Thank you, sir.
Caption from NYP: “The new Sartiano’s in the Mercer Hotel is still working out the kinks — but the $48 cannoli, with whipped mascarpone cheese and Italian-farmed Ossetra caviar, are noteworthy.”
Who’da thunk it? From the column of NYP sports media critic Phil Mushnick, an item for Ripley’s Believe It or Not: “The Special Olympics World Games, held last month in Berlin, is in the throes of betting controversies that have left winning bets made by the public unpaid.”
Another gem from the Staten Island goombah:
RIP actress, writer, director, singer Jane Birkin, 76. Born in London, a descendant of King Charles II Stuart of England and Scotland, her screen career spanned 1976–2020. There are 95 titles under her name at IMDb. She appeared nude in a brief role in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup (1966). Other notable appearances: Kaleidoscope (1966), Death on the Nile (1978) and Evil Under the Sun (1982). She eventually settled in France and had a long relationship with Serge Gainsbourg, with whom she acted and did music. One track was controversial: Je t’aime… moi non plus (I Love You… Me Neither). According to a Google search, “the seemingly contradictory phrase refers to a lack of spiritual/emotional love in an erotic relationship.” It was banned by several radio stations due to the simulated “aural” sex that consisted of various explicit gasps, sighs and moans interspersed throughout the French lyrics. It was a big hit in Europe. By today’s standards it is tame. I found the youtube video boring. In all Birkin recorded 13 studio albums. There are also seven live albums in her name. French design house Hermès named and designed a handbag for her in 1984. The “Birkin” is one of its most popular and expensive bags, at least $6000 each. Birkin was married briefly to composer John Barry, with whom she had a daughter. She had two children out of wedlock, successful actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, and a son with director Jacques Doillon. She has four credits as a director and three as a screenwriter. She was a modern woman in all respects. Facts also from Wiki, photo from Google Images:
The floating book shop was rained out. I hauled some more stuff from the old house to the apartment. I may not be a minimalist anymore.
