In Passing

From an article by Daniella Genovese at foxnews.com: “Two boys in Batesville, Indiana, stopped in their tracks when a funeral procession for a military veteran passed by last week.” Unbeknownst to them, a woman behind them snapped a picture. Kudos all around.

Covid conflict continues. Headline from FN: “Rutgers bars unvaccinated student from attending virtual classes.” How is it legal? Sounds spiteful.

Another FN headline: “Arizona’s state treasurer divests all state funds from Ben & Jerry’s for ‘anti-Semitic’ boycott of Israel.” Kudos.

And another sad one on the Windy City: “Chicago Labor Day weekend shootings wound 63, including 8 children.”

RIP French cinema icon Jean-Paul Belmondo, 88. There are 91 titles under his name at IMDb, another 25 as Producer. His international breakout role came in Breathless (1960), perhaps The New Wave’s most famous film. He soon turned to action fare, most notably That Man from Rio (1964), doing his own stunts, as he did in all his films. Icons in comics books such as Cobra or Blueberry are based on him. He had 30 professional boxing bouts which left him with a broken nose, a scarred face and a slope shouldered walk. He also played classical roles: Cyrano de Bergerac in a 1990 TV movie, and Jean Valjean in a 1995 production of Les Miserables. He received an Honorary Golden Palme at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Ursula Andress, whom he did not marry, dubbed him the love of her life. Married and divorced twice, he is the father of four.

The floating book shop had only three customers today, but each bought in bulk. My thanks to the young mom who purchased an art pictorial in English and another in Russian; and to Bus Driver, who selected three hardcovers thrillers, two by James Patterson, the other by Patricia Cornwell; and to the MTA Lady, who, as usual, opted for non-fiction: Pragmatism with Purpose: Selected Writings (American Philosophy) by Peter Hare, Douglas R. Anderson and Steven A. Miller; Stay Hungry & Kick Burnout in the Butt by Dr. Steven Berglas and Marshall Goldsmith; At Home in the World: Reflections on Belonging While Wandering the Globe by Tsh Oxenreider; Letting Go, Hanging On by John Graden; and Spirit of the North, The Quotable Sigurd F. Olson. Clearly she is on a higher intellectual plane than most.
