Correction. Yesterday I stated that certain California franchises were selling Big Macs for $18. That is only in toney Darien, Connecticut, and includes fries and a drink. Thank you, Miss Connoli.

Final Halloween picture, I promise. From Chile, REUTERS/Pablo Sanhueza:

RIP basketball legend Bobby Knight, 83, one of the most successful and controversial figures in NCAA history. Supporters would say he was old school, detractors abusive. Born in Ohio, he was a reserve on the great Ohio St. teams of the late ‘50’s and was a member of the 1960 National Champions. While serving in the Army he accepted an assistant coaching position at West Point. In 1965, at 24, he was named head coach, and led the Black Knights to tournaments in four of six seasons. He was hired by Indiana in 1971 and went on to win three NCAA championships. His behavior became increasingly boorish and he was dismissed in 2000. He coached Texas Tech from ‘01-’09, winning more than 20 games five times and reaching the NCAA tournament four times, the Sweet 16 in ’05. He led the USA to gold medals in the ’79 Pan American Games and the ‘84 Summer Olympics. His overall win-loss record is 902–371. He is fifth all-time in career wins. His Hoosier teams won eleven Big Ten titles. He was named Coach of the Year seven times by various entities. He is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame. He worked at ESPN as a studio analyst and occasional color commentator from 2008-’15. He was a father of two. A great coach whose awful behavior undermines his legacy. Photo from Google Images:

Stating the obvious to those who have been paying attention, headline from nypost.com: “Hamas officials admit its strategy is to use Palestinian civilians as human shields.”

Fun NYP headline: “Police officer mistaken for stripper as he breaks up wild party: ‘Everyone started twerking’.” Easy to visualize.

NYP cautionary sex trifecta headlines, killjoys at work: “Oral sex is worse than smoking for throat cancer, doctor claims.” “Are cellphones leading to male infertility? New study makes shocking call.” “Here’s the shocking reason your phone addiction is ruining your sex life.” Sheesh.

Good news in this foxnews.com headline: “Cervical cancer drug raises survival rate by 30% compared to chemotherapy: ‘Game-changer’.”

It was cold but beautiful today at the floating book shop, the sunshine allowing me to pass the entire session outside the car. My thanks to the woman who donated a handful of Russian books and to the gentleman who pulled his SUV to the curb and handed me five paperback best sellers; and to the gentleman who bought six books in Russian; and to the woman who purchased one; and to Ira, who took home Atlases on Northern California, Pennsylvania and Long Island; and to Andu and his mom, who selected a Russian DVD of cartoons they watched long ago in Romania; and to Bus Driver, retired one week, who chose Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; and to the guy who dipped into the discount box for thin paperbacks on Rock Stars, The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family.
