RIP Steve Lawrence, 88. Born Sidney Liebowitz in Brooklyn, he came to singing naturally, his father a cantor. He cut classes in high school and hung out at the legendary Brill Building. His first break was at 18, when he, as well as Andy Williams and future wife Eydie Gorme`, were hired by Steve Allen for his late-night show. He had several top ten hits: Party Doll reached #5 in ’55, Pretty Blue Eyes #9 in ’59, Footsteps #7 that same year, Portrait of Love #9 in ’61, Go Away Little Girl #1 in ’62. Several others tracks cracked the top 30, still more the top 100. He released more than 50 albums. He did guest shots on many variety shows, and was surprisingly adept at comedy, frequently appearing on The Carol Burnett Show. There are 32 titles under his name at IMDb in the category of Actor, including roles in The Blues Brothers (1980) and its 1998 sequel, The Lonely Guy (1984) and The Yards (2000). In 1964 he was nominated for a Tony Award for his lead performance in What Makes Sammy Run? He and his Mrs. won an Emmy in ’79 for Outstanding Comedy-Variety or Music Program, Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin. He was a mainstay in nightclubs, solo or with his bride. In a terrific bit of trivia, his prom date was future gossip queen Rona Barrett. He was a father of two. Awesome, Sir. Thank you so much. Facts from Wiki, photo from Google Images:

Headline from newsmax.com: “George Santos Announces New Run for Congress.” Like so many politicians, he isn’t qualified to do anything else.

I found this headline from foxnews.com puzzling, then saw the sub-headline on the page showcasing the article by Megan Myers: “Why mega rich homeowners in one of America’s most expensive zip codes are opening their doors to burglars.” “Residents of a wealthy California town are volunteering themselves up as bait to catch criminals.” Kudos, but I hope it won’t be cases of catch and release.

Luck was again with the Anti-Inflation Book Shop on this gorgeous day. The woman who bought a bunch of costume jewelry yesterday returned, adorned with one of the pieces, and took the rest, again grossly overcompensating me. My thanks, and to local porter Robert, who keeps supplying me with marketable oddities that earn him commission. Here’s what else sold: two books and five DVDs in Russian, a pair of women’s shoes; two bottles of perfume; Stumbling on Happiness, non-fiction by Daniel Gilbert.

Among the many celebrations of March 8th, it’s National Proofreading Day. I hope I didn’t miss any errors.
