Labor Day

Today we celebrate the American laborer. Here’s my all-time favorite, my dad, whose hard work has enabled the easy life I enjoy today.

RIP former Smash Mouth front man Steve Harwell, 56, who succumbed to liver problems brought on by his demons. Born in Santa Clara, previously a rapper, he was a founding member of the band, which released seven studio albums, four compilations, 13 music videos and 19 singles. Two of the albums went platinum, one gold. Three of the singles cracked the top 25, All Star climbing to #4, earning a Grammy nomination for the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Walkin’ on the Sun hit #1 on both the U.S. Adult and Alt charts. There are two titles at IMDb under Harwell’s name in the category of Composer, 21 in Soundtrack, a list that somehow omits the most famous use of All Star, Shrek (1994). Maybe it’s my imagination, but the mainstream media seems eager to bash Vivek Ramaswamy. Not a day goes by without a negative article about him. Is he perceived as a future threat to the left’s hold on minority voters? To me, he seems, although likeable, a politician, and that is not a compliment, although I doubt he is any worse than anyone else in the profession.

As for the labor of love that is the floating book shop, my thanks to Alice, who bought Jackie Robinson: An American Hero by Anne E. Schraff; and to the elderly woman who selected three huge cookbooks; and to the one who purchased three others and four DVDs: Grumpier Old Men (1995), Dumb and Dumber (1994), K-Pax (2001) and Blade (1998).
