Let the Music Play

Last week’s NYC crime stats showed a significant drop, this week’s show a 12% increase… Here’s the most satisfying headline of the day, from foxnews.com: “Media forced to admit Trump-touted coronavirus drug some dubbed ‘snake oil’ shows promise.” Music to my ears… One of the most annoying aspects of the pandemic is that so many are making a final analysis while we are less than halfway through it. There’s so much guesswork…

RIP Bill Withers, 81, singer/songwriter of Lean on Me and Ain’t No Sunshine, both among Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. My favorite of his is the haunting Use Me. The three-time Grammy winner succumbed to heart complications. He is a member of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. His songs have been used in films such as The Hangover, 28 Days, American Beauty, Jerry Maguire, Crooklyn, Flight, Beauty Shop and The Secret Life of Pets, and been sampled by other artists in their recordings. He stopped making music in the mid-1980s and lived outside the public eye. Thank you, sir.

RIP Jazz virtuoso guitarist John “Bucky” Pizzarelli, 94, member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame, who died from complications caused by the Corona virus. He played with all the greats. Well done, goombah.

The first draft of the thriller I’m working on is rolling to a conclusion. It should be done tomorrow. I’ll probably do another draft by hand before taking it to the computer. It will take place before Corona, the late spring of 2019. Since I don’t want to do any research into police procedure, the two detectives are secondary characters. The protagonist is an ordinary guy, the psychopath not much different than those on the big and small screen. The first quarter will also be about what life is like at 70. I’m pretty sure I’ve reached novella length, which is 20,000–50,000 words. If it falls short of 100 pages in MS Word 5x8 format, I may publish it as an ebook only. I may also increase the print size to 14-point. Those decisions are a long way off. I would wait until December to begin the publishing process, as I’ve done for the past eight years. I’m hoping the crisis will be over just as I finish entering the story into my PC, which should be in about a month. Wishful thinking, I suppose. It’s ironic that I’m writing in my least favorite literary genre. I enjoy TV and movie mysteries and thrillers but I’m rarely satisfied with those I read. I now stay away from any that are more than 300 pages.
