Let Them Eat Cake

Are conservatives to take heart in the first ever Massachusetts election loss by a Kennedy? I doubt there’s a dime’s worth of difference between those primary candidates.

Here’s an unsurprising headline from foxnews.com: “US divorce rates skyrocket amid COVID-19 pandemic.” Up 34% from last year, March through June.

Lately, there have been many posts about record-setting fish catches. Is it natural growth or is something in the waters fueling it?

Typical elitist behavior, from an article at foxnews.com, edited by yours truly: Nancy Pelosi visited a San Francisco hair salon on Monday afternoon for a wash and blow-out, despite local ordinances keeping salons closed amid the coronavirus pandemic. In security footage she is seen walking through the place with wet hair — without a mask over her mouth or nose. The stylist doing her hair, following her, is wearing one. I guess it would have been too much trouble to have a beautician come to her home. Entitlement, thy name is Pelosi. Cake, anyone?

I hope most of my work is considered literary even though I’ve never had a piece published in a magazine of note, such as Ploughshares, Zyzzyva, The New Yorker or The Atlantic — not for want of trying. In reading collections of modern stories I am often baffled as to why they were chosen. It makes me feel I have no concept of what constitutes a good short story. I had that feeling again upon completion of The Paris Review Book of People with Problems, published in 2005. It includes works published during a 30-year span. Each is well written, but not one moved me or incited more than mild interest. All but the last can be characterized as “slice of life.” Maybe it would appeal to the smart set or writers out of the mainstream. I was not familiar with any of those fortunate to have been included, all of whom have had far greater success than I. I hope my opinion is not sour grapes. Only two readers at Amazon have rated the book, one giving it five, the other four. I’ll go with three.

With the threat of rain in the air, I displayed only one-third of the wares, excluding even my own books. Turned out I should have put out everything. If only I had a crystal ball. My thanks to the gentleman who overcompensated me for three works of non-fiction: The Four Temperaments: A Fun and Practical Guide to Understanding Yourself and the People in Your Life by Renee Baron, Man vs Mind: Everyday Psychology Explained by Daniel Richardson (Author), Joe Lyward (Illustrator), and How to Give Your Baby Encyclopedic Knowledge by Glenn Doman and Janet Doman. Not much dough, but still way better than staying home.
