Life’s Convoy Rolls On
Confirm Justice Jackson. Would another Biden nominee prove any less radical? Fight on other fronts.
Sad headline from nypost.com: “Taste of Big Apple: NYU tour pelted with eggs as homeless continually harass prospective students.”
Troubling opening line from an NYP article by Susan Edelman: “The citywide rate of chronic absenteeism among NYC public-school students has risen to a staggering 40 percent.”
Wow headline from NYP: “This economy bites: NYC slice costs more than a subway swipe for first time.” I gave up pizza because the sauce enflames my hemorrhoids. Given the news, maybe I won’t miss it as much.
Brilliant NYP headline preceding an article by Michael Benjamin: “The true horror is urban violence, not Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.”
I pause my pandemic silence for this headline from newsmax.com: “German Man Gets 87 COVID Shots to Collect, Sell Vax Passports.” Now that’s a go-getter.
RIP Manhattan-born Estelle Harris, 93. She will be remembered most for her role as George Costanza’s mom in 27 episodes of Seinfeld, but she did a whole lot more, including a ton of voice-overs that took advantage of her unique gift. There are 101 titles under her name at IMDb in a career that spanned 1977–2019. Her most significant big screen credit, besides voicing Mrs. Potato Head in the Toy Story series, is Once Upon a Time in America (1984). The child of Jewish Polish immigrants, she grew up in Pennsylvania. According to her bio, she was primarily a housewife until her children were old enough to attend school. She began in amateur productions and advanced to dinner theater and then to TV commercials. At one point she filmed 23 ads in a single year. She was married 69 years until her husband’s death in 2021. Well done, madam. Thank you.
RIP country music artist C.W. McCall, 93. His Convoy track took America by storm, selling more than two million copies, hitting #1 on the country and pop charts, inspiring a 1978 movie. He created CB jargon still used today by truckers. Born Bill Fries, he was doing ad jingles before turning to the record industry. Seven other of his singles cracked the Country Top 40, Roses for Mama rising to #2. He released eight albums of original material, and four compilations. He served six years as mayor of Ouray, Colorado. He gave his blessing for the use of his signature song for the Freedom Convoy protests in Canada. Married 70 years, he is a father of three. Well done, sir. Thank you. (Facts from Wiki)
The floating book shop was rained out today. My thanks to whoever bought Curious Sicilian this week at Amazon.
