RIP Larry McMurtry, 84, author of one of the greatest novels ever written, Lonesome Dove, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1986. He wrote scores of other books, fiction and non, and also a number of screenplays and teleplays, often adapting his work. He won an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay for Brokeback Mountain (2005), based on an Annie Proulx short story, award shared with Diana Ossana. He was nominated for another: Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (his own novel) for The Last Picture Show (1971), shared with Peter Bogdanovich. He was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Miniseries or a Special: The Murder of Mary Phagan (1988), shared with Jeffrey Lane. The James L. Brooks’ adaptation of McMurtry’s Terms of Endearment (1983) won five Academy Awards. The adaptation of Hud (1963) won three. Lonesome Dove was nominated for a boatload of Emmys and won several in technical categories. It also won two Golden Globes, including Best Mini Series. Awesome, sir. Thank you.

Here’s an interesting marketing gimmick, headline from nypost.com: “Lil Nas X’s ‘Satan Shoes’ will contain drop of human blood.” They will be in a limited edition stock of 666 pairs, each individually numbered, price tag $1018, available March 29th. Oh these kids today.

Nothing says I love you like this NYP headline: “Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz wear each other’s wisdom teeth on necklaces.”

NYP sports media critic Phil Mushnick ended his column with a Passover joke, edited by yours truly: “A blind man is invited to join a family at their Seder. Handed a piece of matzo, the man runs his hand over it, looks up and says, ‘Who wrote this junk?’”

The floating book shop was rained out today.
