Look in the Mirror
During this divisive 50–50 era, I think all Americans would agree that Corona is unique and unprecedented. Nothing is written in stone. There’s a lot of guesswork. The terms “may” and “might” are especially exasperating, at least to me, as they say nothing. Has President Trump’s response been good? It’s still too soon to call. His best measures have been the January 31st China travel ban and the touting of Hydoxychloroquine which, although not a cure, has reduced symptoms in thousands of people who were very ill. Are we even halfway home yet? Those on the front lines are learning on the fly, including the Commander in Chief. The most discouraging aspect outside the deaths is the politicization of the crisis. The finger-pointing by the mainstream media is maddening to Trump supporters, of which I’m one. Brilliantly, his team has collected clips of the MM’s missteps, thrown a montage of some of it in its face and promised much more. Unfortunately, it won’t stop his enemies. The MM sees the crisis as a way to remove Trump from office and will take full advantage, counting on reaching a point that will tip power back to the left. It may happen. Trump is the boss and will be held accountable by the public. As of now his poll numbers have not been harmed and have even shown signs of rising. If the crisis drags on, voters may not be forgiving, despite the novelty of the situation. I have no idea how this will play out. I want Trump to prevail. I have more trust in him, despite his faults, than the thousands of political hacks coast to coast, Republicans as well as Democrats.
Here are some interesting quotes and facts gathered from various sources. I will be as guilty of finger-pointing as others:
Dr. Fauci’s Timeline, from Mark Simone’s page at https://710wor.iheart.com:
January 21st he said: “Americans Don’t Need To Worry About Coronavirus.”
February 8th: “Danger of getting coronavirus now is just minusculely low.”
February 29th tells the Today Show that there is NO NEED for the public to change their behavior over concern for Coronavirus.
March 9th he recommends taking a cruise, tells Forbes Magazine that if you’re healthy, cruise ships are safe.
And here’s a bit from NYC mayor Red Billy De Blasio: Feb. 14: “this should not stop you from going about your life … from going out to Chinatown and going out to eat.”
And here’s one of his tweets from March 2nd: “Since I’m encouraging New Yorkers to go on with your lives + get out on the town despite Coronavirus, I thought I would offer some suggestions. Here’s the first: thru Thurs 3/5 go see “The Traitor” @FilmLinc. If “The Wire” was a true story + set in Italy, it would be this film.
On February 9th NYC health commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot urged people to attend a Lunar New Year celebration in Chinatown, telling them not to “change any plans due to misinformation.” Many may have heeded her advice:
And here’s a March 1st quote from Andrew Cuomo: “There is no cause for surprise — this was expected. As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York.” He assured New Yorkers that the general risk in the state “remains low.”
A lot of people should be looking in the mirror — and not to admire themselves.
