Men of the Hour

Kudos to the Kansas City coaches who fixed the defensive unit’s problem against the run that plagued the first half of their season. Tennessee’s workhorse Derrick Henry had been on a roll. The Chiefs held him to 69 yards and a 3.6 average per carry. And what more can be said about phenom Patrick Mahomes, whose rifle arm allows him to complete passes other QB’s can only do in their dreams. His 27-yard TD run was the turning point of the game, a play on which the Titans’ defense seemed to be asleep. All that said, the day belonged to San Francisco’s journeyman RB Raheem Mostert, 27, who rushed for 220 yards, 7.6 average per carry, and scored four TDs, the first time anyone has combined such yardage and scores in a playoff game. Undrafted out of Purdue in 2015, he’d been cut by six teams, including the hapless Jets — LOL! Perhaps coaches were concerned about his size. He is listed as 183 pounds, lightweight for a featured back these days. The 49ers threw only eight passes yesterday, a throwback to another era. The Super Bowl matchup looks great on paper. Andy Reid gets his second chance to put an exclamation point on his outstanding coaching career. A win would almost certainly qualify him for the Hall of Fame.

An epic political battle is underway in Virginia, where the governor and his allies seek to enact strict gun laws. Gun sales have boomed. Pro-gun demonstrators have taken to the streets. I guess it’s one way to boost an economy. I spotted several sources that estimate today’s crowd at 22,000. For the record, I do not own a gun but I support the right to bear arms. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Maybe it was the crisp air, but I felt unusually strong today, maybe as high as 90% of my heyday. The combination of cold and wind sent me to my alternate book-selling site. I lined the display up curbside and spent most of the session with my back to the entrance of the Chase bank, which was closed in honor of Dr. King. It looked like there would be zero sales until a woman came along as I was packing up and bought two books in Russian, which was surprising, as she has been so discerning in the past. My thanks, and also to the woman who donated three paperback best sellers. Tomorrow my latest will be available, as 15 copies just arrived.
