Meryl, Not Streep

Salon, North Massapequa, NY, June 1976. Photo by Meryl Meisler, posted at theguardian.com. Raised on Long Island, she is 73. Her Wiki profile lists four books of her work. One of the clubs she took pictures in was Hurrah, which I visited frequently in the late ‘70’s, early 80’s. It’s featured in the opening scene of my rock n roll epic Rising Star. I don’t recall a photographer being there:

I’m no fan of Eric Adams, but I feel sorry for him. Once he’s gone he will be replaced by another liberal, so there’s no reason to hate him. That’s just the way things are in NYC. Accept it or leave. He pleaded for a halt from the inundation of migrants and it aroused enmity. Once a rising star, he is threatened with political extinction. Headline from nypost.com that shows the viciousness of that wretched world: “Eric Adams becomes first sitting NYC mayor to be indicted in historic federal probe — claims feds persecuting him over migrant crisis.” I don’t doubt there’s been corruption. That is the nature of the game and it is usually ignored. Why not now?

Signs o’ the times, from NYP: “De’vend’s on whom you ask: NYC’s drug-user supply vending machine — with crack pipes and ‘meth kits’ — is so popular, workers have to refill it twice a week.” “O brave new world…” Shakespeare, The Tempest. And: “They’re killing college: campus: College enrollment and trust are low, caught in a death spiral of liberal ideology.”

These male Kennedys…

Headline from foxnews.com: “VP Harris’ climate hypocrisy exposed with eye-popping private jet spending.” She follows in the footsteps of pseudo-climate warriors John Kerry and the like… And: “White House grilled on Harris’ gun ownership, mandatory gun buybacks.” Do as I say, blah blah blah…

I added the politician confession to Three Visitors, which is now Four…. I wonder if I worked too fast. It usually takes two handwritten drafts and two readings before it is ready to be typed it into the file. This time it was only one draft and two readings. The manuscript is now 22,704 words, still well short of what I’d want a print copy to be.

Interesting trend developing in Europe, in this case Spain. From FN: “This rural destination is paying people $16K to move there, work remotely.” Three hours from Madrid.

From FN: “Volkswagen ketchup, offered to US consumers for first time, is quickly snatched up.” Free of motor oil, I hope.

The Anti-Inflation Book Shop was blessed with dumb luck on this gloomy day. I paused beneath the awning of the Caspiy restaurant, hoping the rain would slacken, and who pulls up to the curb but one of the owners of the Georgian bakery, who always asks for Harry Potter. He overcompensated me for two books in the series. My thanks, and also to Movie Buff, who passed the way of the gloom and grime of the viaduct and bought Pygmy by Chuck Pahlaniuk and Tripwire by Lee Child.
