Mid-day Sonata

Bear in mind that the source of this surprising newsmax.com headline usually demonstrates a liberal bias: “Rasmussen Poll: Majority Think Feds Provoked 1/6.” According to the article by Nicole Wells, 65% believe it. Given the source, does that mean the percentage is even higher? I’m shocked. Supposedly, the trend is influenced by Tucker Carlson’s video probe of the event.

Is this proof that America is suffering a mental health crisis? Headline from NM: “Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Biden Approval Slips Below 40 Percent.” How is it even that high?

RIP NFL Hall of Fame LB Dave Wilcox, 80. Born in Oregon, one of eight siblings, he was an All-American at Boise Junior College, then transferred to the University of Oregon, where he played guard and defensive end. The 29th pick in the third round of the 1964 NFL draft, he spent his entire eleven-year career with the 49ers, missing only one game. Known as The Intimidator, he was first team All-Pro twice, second team twice. AP named him All-NFL four times. He was selected to seven Pro Bowls. He had 14 interceptions, 12 fumble recoveries and 36.5 sacks. His two sons, Justin and Josh, played for Oregon. Justin is the head coach at Cal. I loved the way Wilcox stood in the defensive huddle, one foot, I forget which, crossed behind the other. To my chagrin, I was unable to find a picture of it. Well done, Sir. Headline from foxnews.com: “Italian politician called racist after saying country should have more kids instead of importing migrants.” The country’s birth rate in 2020 was 1.24 per woman. Replacement rate is 2.1. At that rate, Italy one day will no longer be Italian.

I find the opening of Bethoven’s Moonlight Sonata haunting. I found a youtube video on it for guitar, interested only in the first twelve notes. If I’m hearing it right, it’s three notes in A-Minor repeated consecutively four times. I use a pick rather than my fingers but it still sounds good. The 13th note, the G bass, which leads to another cycle of the three, is a bit tricky — at least for me. Still, I’m glad I didn’t assume I wouldn’t be able to do it. I will not attempt to learn the entire piece. That’s for real musicians, not a dabbler like me.

The floating book shop was swamped with donations today that included at least ten Hollywood pictorials and six novels by Agatha Christie. My thanks, and to Alice, who bought Predator by Patricia Cornwell, and to my Constant Benefactress, who insisted on paying for Audrey Hepburn’s Neck by Alan Brown; and to the gentlemen looking to improve his English, who took home two young adult novels at my suggestion: Archvillain by Barry Lyga and Icefire by Chris D’Lacey; and to the young man who selected The Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes; and to the gent who chose a hardcover in Russian.
