From an article at foxnews.com: “Conservative group Turning Point USA has launched an initiative encouraging college and university donors who believe their values no longer align with their alma maters to ‘de-commit’ their gifts and redirect the money to different causes — rather than fund ‘left-wing indoctrination.’” It’s called “DivestU.” And in a related story, this headline: “… anti-bigotry reading list includes book that equates conservatism with racism.” It’s part of the George Washington University syllabus. I wonder if my name is in that book. Nah, too small a fish.

Fortunately I passed down Stop n Shop’s Goya aisle this morning, or I might have again forgotten to buy one of its products. I chose this, which I will use with my morning Honey Nut Cheerios:

From Yahoo Sports, edited by yours truly: The news continues to be good on the high school basketball front. Another top prospect has decided to forgo the NCAA’s one-and-done nonsense and opt for the NBA’s minor league. Jonathan Kuminga, 17, will join fellow five-star recruits Jalen Green, Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix, and play in the G League. Kudos to these young men.

Since I avoid driving as much as possible, I don’t use my car much, which is not good for the battery. I knew mine was dead when the rear doors of the old Hyundai remained locked after I opened the driver’s door this morning. The same had happened about two years ago. Maybe it was longer, maybe shorter. I must have thrown the receipt away. For the first time I noticed that AAA will replace the battery on the spot, which eliminates the need to go to the service station. When the guy drove up I asked if he wanted me to wear the mask that was around my throat. He wasn’t wearing one. He thinks it’s useless. I don’t know what to think, although I tend toward skepticism. The process, including the wait, took about 45 minutes. The price was $180, which wasn’t much more than it had been last time at Emil’s — if I remember correctly. I’d hoped to be billed, but payment was required on the spot. I hate to use my credit card, rarely do. The guy said letting the car run for ten minutes on those days it’s not used actually drains the battery, as it is not enough time for the battery to recover to where it was when the engine was started. So I guess the problem will return in two years. I put the receipt in the glove compartment, although the guy said if the employee sees the car has not accumulated a reasonable amount of mileage in the interim, there will be no pro-rated discount.

Fortunately, the floating book shop had a decent day, despite the prospect of car despair looming after closing down. My thanks to one of the Brainiac Brothers, who donated a beautiful pictorial on China, which a young day bought along with little Russian-English and English-Russian dictionaries, three novels by Dan Brown and a couple of self-help books. He would have something to do while his beautiful kids frolicked in the park. My thanks also to the woman who purchased a Darya Dontsova mystery in Russian, and to the mailman who paused on his route to buy Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength by Roy F. Baumeister and John Tierney… I had a visit from Marty, NYPD retired, who was livid about yesterday’s attack on his brethren on the Brooklyn Bridge. He did not know there is video of a car pulling up and distributing baseball bats. Those hired hand rioters are probably already out of the city and on their way elsewhere to perpetrate mayhem. May they be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
