Monday Mourning
I’ve never forgotten this quote from The X-Files, said by Scully, which seems especially pertinent today: “… my father always taught me to respect nature ’cause it has no respect for you.” Season three, episode 22, The Quagmire, written by Chris Carter, Kim Newton, Darin Morgan. Blessings to everyone needing assistance.
What the heck would a port strike do to grocery prices? As if they aren’t high enough. Geez.
Let’s take a moment to focus on something positive: Paris Fashion Week, AFP via Getty Images, posted at standard.co.uk:
RIP Kris Kristofferson, 88. Born in Texas, he earned a scholarship to Oxford. He served in the U.S. Army and became a helicopter pilot. He befriended Johnny Cash, who recorded Kristofferson’s Sunday Morning Coming Down, voted 1970 Song of the Year by the Country Music Association. He struggled with alcohol abuse until 1976. There are 121 titles under his name at IMDb, screen career spanning 1971–2018. Here are films in which he appeared: Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976), Heaven’s Gate (1980), the Blade series, Planet of the Apes (2001). He received an Oscar nomination for Best Music, Original Song Score, Songwriter (1985). He was nominated for 14 Grammys, winning four, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He recorded 18 albums of his own music, and six in collaboration with other artists. Most did well on the Country charts. The soundtrack to A Star Is Born hit #1 overall. He released 31 singles. Two cracked the Top 30, Why Me? hitting #16 on the Hot 100, and #1 on the Country chart. Kristofferson is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. His songs were recorded by many artists, most notably Me and Bobby McGhee, co-written with Fred Foster, a #1 for Janis Joplin; Help Me Make It Through the Night by Sammi Smith, which hit #1 on the Country chart. He did three albums of duets with second wife Rita Coolidge. Full Moon hit #1 on the Country chart, #26 on the Hot 100. Married three times, the last time from 1983 until his passing, he was a father of nine. Awesome run, Sir. Photo from Google Images:
Holy moly! Headline from nypost.om: “Wheel expensive: Celeb-filled NYC condo building offering parking spots for $500K.” And they’re going fast, according to a spokesperson.
Read it and weep. Headline from newsmax.com: “ICE: 13,000 Migrants Convicted of Murder Living Freely in US.”
It’s hard to imagine America ever again being united. Two headlines from foxnews.com: “Restaurant bars JD Vance from entering so supporters quickly cancel their orders and walk out.” And: “Netflix co-founder’s VP Harris donation prompts subscribers to cancel in droves.” I lost Netflix when it ceased mail delivery. I would have been tempted to cancel but my love of movies would have probably prevented it.
The rain moved out and it was a pleasant day for curbside business. The Anti-Inflation Book Shop had its best session in weeks. My thanks to Gordie, who donated two hardcover mysteries, and to the woman who delivered one in Russian and four beautiful little hardcovers: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Bran Stoker’s Dracula, and two collections of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and to the savvy young woman who bought them; and to Wolf, who took home The Forgotten by David Baldacci, a translation of Edgar Rice Burroughs in Russian, a collection of Hercules movies and Caddyshack (1980) on DVD; and to the woman who purchased One Day at a Time by Danielle Steele; and to Herbie, who chose Judgment Prey by John Sandford.
