Money & Fame

How’s this for a mind-blowing headline about college sports? — “FSU fires Willie Taggart, will pay over $20M to buy out entire coaching staff.” Must be nice to have such cash to throw around. If a university has such money to burn, why is its tuition so high? (Yahoo)

The greed of NYC government struck my family on a personal level recently. My eldest niece is now the sole occupant of our old house. It was originally a four-family dwelling, the two units downstairs combined to accommodate my sister’s brood. My niece works a hospital shift from three or four in the afternoon to eleven PM. The other day she put the garbage at the curb before she left — and some lowlife wrote a ticket for it being put out too soon! The people who run thus town are swine.

A 21-year-old Minnesota college student drove 270 miles to Clive, Iowa, every Saturday to buy up to 100 boxes of doughnuts, earning more than double on each $8 box. He was unintentionally outed by a newspaper article lauding his entrepreneurial spirit. Word got to Krispy Kreme, and bigwigs put the kibosh on the endeavor. Here’s a shout to the young man and a loud boo to the company and its killjoy execs. (foxnews.com)

The Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed at record highs today. My retirement accounts are at all-time highs. Will the bubble burst? Are the ginormous deficit and massive debt meaningless? It seems to fly in the face of common sense.

I haven’t watched SNL in years. It has received a lot of press since Saturday’s show. It actually aired a skit lampooning Elizabeth Warren’s health care plan, and one of the anchors on the Weekend Update segment has drawn fire for a second straight show, accused of sexist and ageist comments. Great to hear it’s pushing the envelope in directions other than the obvious.

Gina Lollobrigida is one of my all-time favorites. She’s still with us at 92. Lately, the name she was given by the creators/writers of the Flintstones, Gina Lollobrickida, has been popping into my mind, bringing a smile to my face. Ann Margaret was referred to as Ann Margrock, Tony Curtis as Stoney Curtis, Cary Grant as Cary Granite, Ed Sullivan as Ed Sullystone, Perry Mason as Perry Masonry. There were conjured by the fertile minds of the show’s creators, who also wrote the episodes, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. In 1963 Ann-Margret guest-starred, singing The Littlest Lamb, a lullaby, and Ain’t Gonna Be a Fool, a rocker. Here’s a pic:

And here’s one of Gina at the height of her powers:

A new book has launched:

My thanks to the kind folks who bought books on this gorgeous day. Most of the trade was in kids’ fare, purchased by young, intelligent, loving moms.
