More Than Bargained For
Not all the news is bad today. This rescue took place on the Detroit River. Photo from foxnews.com:
Random thought: In 1867 visionary Secretary of State William Seward arranged for Alaska to be purchased from Russia. Know-it-alls dubbed it “Seward’s Folly.” The price tag was $7.2 million, a bargain, a steal when weighed against the passage of more than 150 years. Imagine how much more oil money Putin would have to play with if Russia had held onto that area so rich in natural resources. Here’s a cartoon roasting Seward. Sorry, I was unable to find attribution.
Let’s hope this headline from nypost.com proves true: “Russian resistance is growing against Putin’s war.”
I am in almost 100% disagreement with Quid Pro Joe’s policies. Here’s one I support, headline from newsmax.com: “Biden Sends Stinger Missiles to Ukraine to Shoot Down Russian Helicopters.” It probably won’t do much to prevent what seems inevitable, but it’s right.
Here’s another of those acronyms: IYKYK. It stands for “if you know you know” and implies a post or message will make sense to some people and no sense to others. Sounds elitist.
This opinion may surprise some folks. I believe schools should be allowed to choose what’s available in its libraries. For instance, I don’t think any of my books is a good fit for schools. However, I would object to a ban imposed on any book by public libraries.
Here’s an interesting headline from newsmax.com: “Dems Press Treasury Over Concerns of Russia Evading Sanctions via Crypto.” More evidence that it is a viable currency. Unfortunately, it will be used by criminals and warmongers.
Headline from foxnews.com: “Pelosi favors banning all Russian oil imports into the United States.” Yes. Since the left won’t allow the U.S. to be energy independent, make up the shortfall by buying more from Canada and Mexico.
Another headline from FN: “NY politician holds gun drive as Ukraine citizens take up arms against Russian invaders.” It’s Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Democrat. Kudos. I wonder what the party’s gun control advocates think of it.
Here’s one from foxbusiness.com: “Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov’s $600M yacht seized in Germany.” He’s a close ally of Putin. I wonder how Vlad will react to the seizure. Will he turn off the spigot of one of his biggest customers?
Also from FN: “GONE OFFLINE: Netflix quits Russia over its invasion on Ukraine.” Kudos.
Not much action at the floating book shop on this crisp, gorgeous day. My thanks to Vito, who bought Run for Your Life by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge, and to the young man who purchased Stop Procrastinating: A Simple Guide to Hacking Laziness, Building Self Discipline, and Overcoming Procrastination by Nils Salzgeber, Running from the Law: Why Good Lawyers Are Getting Out of the Legal Profession by Deborah L. Arron, and a faith-based book whose title escapes me.
