More Than Fun
As much as I despise career politician Quid Pro Joe, I don’t want to see an impeachment. The guy’s in bad shape. Then again, if he refuses to step aside… Why would Republicans hasten his departure? He’s the Democrat most likely to lose in 2024. Any other would likely win.
I got a bit of a shock yesterday at Stop n Shop. The 32-ounce Pepsi, most recently $1.30, was $1.78. I hope it was an error. I’d thought inflation had peaked.
Among the celebrations of 11/12 is International Tongue Twister Day. Back in the day on WNEW show Just for Fun, Sonny Fox would prompt kids to pronounce, several times in succession, Six thick thistle sticks and Unique New York. Here’s one I found at byjus.com: Which wrist watches are Swiss wrist watches? Photo from Google Images:
When one uses an antenna for TV reception, the results are inconsistent. I assume the source of the digital signal, a satellite perhaps, changes position. Occasionally some stations are lost, others gained. I believe a big storm also causes change, and the signal is blocked in part due to my being on the second floor of a six-story building that faces the courtyard, not the street. Recently, the channel-five stations, including my favorite, Movies! 5–2 in NYC, have disappeared, and another batch featuring old programming has materialized. The channel eleven series have also shown up, but the reception isn’t there, just a page blank except for a “Weak or No Signal” message. To my delight, Svengoolie of Me-TV is back. Unfortunately, he ran a Munster’s flick last night. I passed. Retro, 43–8, showed Stanley Kubrick’s first film, Fear and Desire (1952), which I’d never seen. Unfortunately, it aired at ten, so I fell asleep and missed most of it. I’m tempted to become a coffee drinker to stay awake, to correct this hated aspect of aging.
The recent creative jag I’ve been on seems to have come to an end. I banged out three short stories, shy of 12,000 words total, 59 pages in 14-point print, not even halfway to small book length. I’ve banked them in a Google Docs file hoping other ideas will come my way.
Restoration has uncovered a demonic image in The Death of Cardinal Beaufort, painted by Joshua Reynolds, who died in 1792. It depicts a scene from Shakespeare’s Henry VI. The figure was covered, most likely deliberately, by layers of varnish. Using an online converter, I found the work is approximately 7x5. Here is the specific portion, photo from GI:
From an article by Adam Sabes at foxnews.com, in my own words: Here’s something that perfectly manifests the insanity of the pro-criminal era in which we live. Homeless people were stealing toilet paper from a DC CVS. Staff replaced the products with framed pictures of them. Customers press a button for assistance and an employee retrieves the product from a stock room. Photo from GI:
It was a gorgeous day to do business curbside. My thanks to the woman who bought The Klone and I by Danielle Steel, and to the one who purchased a hardcover in Russian; and to Wolf, who chose two books and a DVD in Russian; and to Alice, who selected The Vendetta Defense by Lisa Scottoline; and to the woman who took home four books in Russian.
