Does this make any sense? Headline from nypost.com: “Hochul’s budget plan includes $1.2K in bonus cash for welfare recipients when they have a baby.” What do run-of-the-mill taxpayers who have kids get?

Empire State biz as usual. From NYP: “NY wastes so much money it needs $80 MILLION to a fix a staircase.” Albany Capitol building. Why don’t they ask DT how much one of his companies would charge? Remember the Central Park ice rink?

Here’s some fun trivia culled from Wait, That Means What? — 28 Great Songs With Backstories We Had No Idea About by Brian C. Miller at msm.com:
The Beach Boys’ Never Learn Not to Love was written by Charles Manson, friend of drummer Dennis Wilson.
Katy Perry’s Firework was inspired by a quote from On the Road by Jack Kerouac: “The only people for me are the mad ones (who) burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars…”
Leonard Lipton wrote the poem on which Puff, the Magic Dragon is based. He swears it’s not about marijuana.
Leonard Cohen’s haunting Hallelujah was around for years, largely unappreciated until its inclusion in Shrek (2001).

Had to happen. Headline from foxnews.com: “Trans-Identifying Male Actor Nominated For ‘Best Actress’ Academy Award.” I will not bother looking it up. How will the voting go? Will he be a shoo-in-darling of PC Tinseltown, or will pissed off actresses vote enmasse for a real woman?

Troubling news out of the Empire State, from FN: “Homelessness nearly doubles in blue state in just 2 years: report.”

RIP ace guitarist John Sykes, 65, who succumbed to cancer. Born in England, he began playing at 14. He enjoyed minor success until he joined Thin Lizzy, meshing well with front man Phillip Lynott, who would pass away at 36 in 1986. Sykes joined Whitesnake and hit it off with front man David Coverdale, co-writing songs. The band’s seventh album, 1987, hit #2 on the Billboard 200 and sold eight million copies. Eventually their relationship became strained, and Sykes formed Blue Murder, which had modest success. He then went solo. In all, he appears on 16 studio albums. He worked with Def Leppard and Rick Wakeman of Yes, and participated in tributes to Garry Moore, Phillip Lynott and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He was a dad of three. Well done, Sir. It’s National Pie Day. I’ll take any ala mode.

I waited for the sunshine to hit my book nook and ventured out into the cold an hour later than usual. It was great to be back doing the Anti-Inflation Book Shop, despite a dearth of sales. My thanks to my Constant Benefactress, who bought Mark Twain Essays, and to the Lady Eve, who donated two items. Looking forward to tomorrow’s session.
