RIP actor Phillip Baker Hall, 90, who will probably be remembered most for his hilarious turn as the library investigator, Mr. Bookman, who harassed Jerry on that memorable episode of Seinfeld. Born in Toledo, a graduate of the city’s university, he first worked as a radio announcer and high school teacher before turning to acting at 30. There are 185 titles under his name at IMDb in a career that spanned 1970–2020. I first noticed him in mid-career, an awesome performance as a gambler in Paul Michael Thomas’ Hard Eight (1996). He also had substantial roles in two other Thomas films: Magnolia (1999) and Boogie Nights (1997). And he appeared in the following, significant commercially or artistically or both: Midnight Run (1988), The Rock (1996), The Truman Show (1998), Rush Hour (1998), The Insider (1999), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Bruce Almighty (2003), Dogville (2003), Zodiac (2007). He also played Richard Nixon in Robert Altman’s Secret Honor (1984), a one-man performance, Aristotle Onasis in Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (2000), and Senator Everett Dirksen in John Frankenheimer’s Path to War (2002). He made at least five appearances on eight TV series. The fact that he was never nominated for an Oscar, Emmy or Golden Globe is a major oversight. Apple’s AirTags help find a lost item by showing a map of the location or by playing a sound. An iPhone 11 or later will locate the AirTag with Precision Finding. It was a good day to sell stuff curbside, despite the sprinkles that began as I was closing shop. My thanks to Steve, who donated four marketable books, and to Marty, NYPD retired, who cleared a nice cache of kids’ stuff and non-fiction out of his daughter’s old room and delivered them in two bags; and to The Quiet Man, who bought 300 (2006) on DVD and a season of The Family Guy; and to the gentleman who chose Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling; and to the one who purchased Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Client by John Grisham and It’s Your Time by Joel Osteen; and to the woman who took home a kids’ book in Russian.
