Music Fun, an Anagram & More

Return to sanity, headline from nypost.com: “Morgan Stanley joins Goldman Sachs, Citi in exodus from UN-backed climate alliance.” May defections continue.

More sanity, headline from foxnews.com: “GOP rebels switch votes to re-elect Speaker Johnson after president-elect intervenes.” It’s a thankless job for a Republican, as there will always be those who despise, oppose certain spending — rightfully, whereas a Dem will provide carte blanche to his brethren.

A fun quiz culled from Only the biggest music buffs can name these 15 iconic one-hit wonders from a single lyric by Sandi Hemmerlein at msm.com. Answers below. Although I’ve heard 13 of them, I was able to name only seven:
1. “Captain Kirk.”
2. “He’s not vicious or malicious/ Just de-lovely and delicious.”
3. “I backed my car into a cop car the other day/ Well, he just drove off, sometimes life’s okay.”
4. “A little bit of Jessica, here I am/ A little bit of you makes me your man.”
5. “Alright stop, collaborate and listen.”
6. “Step on a crack/ Break your momma’s back.”
7. “Tell me all your thoughts on God/ ’Cause I would really like to meet her.”
8. “No, you didn’t have to stoop so low/ Have your friends collect your records and then change your number.”
9. “Pack it up, pack it in, let me begin/ I came to win, battle me, that’s a sin.”
10. “Gotta make a move to a town that’s right for me/ Town to keep me movin’, keep me groovin’ with some energy.”
11. “I remember when/ I remember, I remember when I lost my mind.”
12. “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”
13. “And now I’m back/ To let you know/ I can really shake ’em down.”
14. “Hey, what’s that sound?/ Everybody look what’s going down.”
15. “There ain’t nothin’ in the world/ Like a big-eyed girl/ That makes me act so funny/ Make me spend my money.”

I visited the doctor this morning fully expecting to be prescribed meds for BP and cholesterol. Amazingly, both remain borderline, so no drugs. I was ready to surrender, tired of denying myself goodies, wary of side effects.

Last night PBS channel 21–4 in NYC ran the final part of Magpie Murders. It is the story of the missing last chapter to a murdered author’s final mystery. The tale also includes what occurs in the novel, set in the ‘50’s. The writer is a sourpuss who hates his popular, best-selling creations and would rather be doing “great” literature. He is so contemptuous of his hero that his name, Atticus Pund, is a nasty anagram: A stupid … I’m surprised Brits use the term. Set in London and surrounding areas, it is based on the novel by Anthony Horowitz. It’s solid entertainment that requires concentration, especially viewing weekly installments, as it moves back and forth in time. The ending of the modern part is a bit faulty, the past first rate. Lesley Manville stars as the editor on the hunt, and Tim McMullan as the master sleuth. Photo from Google Images:

1. Nena: 99 Red Balloons, German title 99 Luftballons.
2. Deee-Lite: Groove Is in the Heart. Great dance track.
3. Modest Mouse: Float On. Don’t believe I’ve ever heard it.
4. Lou Bega: Mambo №5.
5. Vanilla Ice: Ice Ice Baby.
6. Devo: Whip It.
7. Dishwalla: Counting Blue Cars.
8. Gotye: Somebody That I Used to Know. Brilliant track.
9. House of Pain: Jump Around. Crazy fun.
10. Lipps Inc.: Funkytown. “Let me take you to…”
11. Gnarls Barkley: Crazy. No recollection of it.
12. Semisonic: Closing Time. Really nice pop tune.
13. The Contours: Do You Love Me. Had the .45.
14. Buffalo Springfield: For What It’s Worth. An era defining song.
15. The Big Bopper: Chantilly Lace. “Oh, baby, you know what I like.” Love it!

Conditions were infinitely better at today’s session of the Anti-Inflation Book Shop — full sunshine, benign wind. My thanks to the gentleman who caught me as I was closing up and bought four books in Russian and a whole spindle of DVDs that includes five in the Harry Potter series; and to the lovely woman with the islands accent who purchased Grammaire pédagogique du français d’aujourd’hui by Suzanne-G. Chartrand, and a colorful textbook on Economics; and to the guy who chose the Eleven Short Stories collection; and to the one who took home Nat Sherman’s a Passion for Cigars: Selecting, Preserving, Smoking, and Savoring One of Life’s Greatest Pleasures by Joel Sherman and Robert Ivry (include me out); and to Herbie, who selected JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio & Liz McNeil.
