Next Door
RIP Jane Powell, 92, star during Hollywood’s so-called Golden Age. Born Suzanne Lorraine Burce in Portland, Oregon, she was singing on a children’s radio program at eight. At 16 she signed with MGM. When her movie career ended in the late ‘50’s, she turned to the stage, and also made guest appearances on TV series. There are 46 titles under her name at IMDb. Her most famous screen roles came in Royal Wedding (1951) and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954). She performed before five U.S. Presidents and the Queen of England. Although she had the appearance of the girl next door, she married five times, the final one to former child actor Dickie Moore in 1988, a union that lasted until his death in 2015. She was a mom of three. She wrote an autobio, published in 1988. Well done, madam. Thank you:
Here’s more evidence that Bitcoin may be legit, headline from nypost.com: “World’s largest cinema chain soon accepting cryptocurrencies.” It’s AMC.
Interesting idea in an NYP op-ed piece by Rich Lowry. He suggests the stolen election narrative has become and will be an albatross for Republicans “…anywhere independents and moderates are needed to win an election…” At this point I agree, as the investigations have not yielded any evidence. The fact that the Arizona recount result has yet to be made public suggests there’s no there there. I hope to be proven wrong.
Yesterday I’d thought Quid Pro Joe had finally gotten something right. What could be wrong with the alliance with the UK and Australia to build nuclear submarines for the land down under in an effort to thwart any ambition China may have in the region? He left out France, which is “the only European nation present in the Indo-Pacific with nearly 2 million citizens and more than 7,000 military personnel.” The frogs are not happy and croaking about the snub. They have recalled their ambassadors to the USA and Australia. (Article by Steven Nelson at nypost.com)
Interesting headline from newsmax.com: “Women Nearly Half of New Gun Buyers, Study Shows.” 55% white, 21% Black, 19% Hispanic.
Scene yesterday at the border near Del Rio, Texas, 8000+. Glad the mainstream media is as on top of this as they are with all of Biden’s moves:
And what would a day be without a bizarre pandemic headline?: “Phillies’ Didi Gregorius links COVID vaccine side effect to down year.” He’s their shortstop.
How ‘bout this book?:
The rain held off for a second straight day and the floating book shop enjoyed brisk business, fueled by DVD sales. At the end of the session only one disk remained, The Matrix Reloaded (2003). I will reload tomorrow. My thanks to the kind folks who made purchases. Here’s what else sold: three books in Russian, a JFK pictorial and Sweet Caroline: Last Child of Camelot by Christopher Andersen; two art pictorials; The Maul and the Pear Tree: The Ratcliffe Highway Murders, 1811 by P.D. James and Thomas A. Critchley; and The Paris Vendetta by Steve Berry.
