No Foolin’

We’ve all been there:

Headline from nypost.com: “Trump would have been better off robbing Stormy with a gun — Bragg would have thrown that case out.” And: “Trump raises $4 million toward presidential campaign in 24 hours after indictment.” Who will be the fool in the end?

NYP editorial excerpts on Vlad’s folly: “Also lost: 3,595 tanks, nearly 7,000 armored combat vehicles, over 2,638 artillery pieces, 523 multiple rocket launchers, 277 air defense systems, 305 jets, and 291 helicopters.” “As many as 60,000 dead.” He is one of the all-time fools.

Friday night’s movie fix was a blend of mystery with possible supernatural intrusion. Below (2002) is set aboard a WWII American submarine whose Captain was lost at sea. The crew picks up three survivors, one female, of a sunken Red Cross ship. The boat is suffering an oil and hydrogen leak, and diminished oxygen, the latter two problems having the potential to cause hallucinations. Meanwhile, a German ship is trailing. There are many quick scare moments along the way. Screenwriters Lucas Sussman, Darren Aronofsky and David Twohy chose to leave the events open to interpretation. Twohy directed. Among his nine credits as a director are The Arrival (1996) and Pitch Black (2000). He has 24 credits as a writer, among them the Riddick series, and three as a producer. The cast is comprised of familar faces, only two of which I was able to name: Bruce Greenwood and Olivia Williams. The effects are solid, the sets terrific, the violence intelligently shot, the profanity modest by today’s standards. My biggest quibble is that close captioning is not available on the disc, so I wasn’t able to enjoy this entertaining film as much as I should have. Those who must have resolution should pass. Here’s Greenwood in character:

Perhaps the most amusing headline of the day: “Traveling mummy exhibit may pose health risks to visitors due to fungal growths, Mexican experts say.” A fool and his mummy are soon parted.

Luck was with the floating book shop today at its last resort location. Not only was there a pause in the rain, my lone customer bought in bulk. My thanks to Jose, who took home all 15 audio books on display, and to Mother Nature for not making a fool of me.
