Odd Laws & More
In an article at nypost.com Reed Tucker explores highlights from a new book: How to Become a Federal Criminal: An Illustrated Handbook for the Aspiring Offender by Mike Chase, a lawyer. Here are a few quirky laws cited in the piece, edited by yours truly:
Federal law forbids falconers from letting their birds appear in films that aren’t about falconry. Filmmakers use lookalike and CG birds.
The government regulates how thick ketchup must be. It’s tested by sending it down a trough to see how far it travels in 30 seconds.
Federal law forbids the disparaging of a competitor’s products on a wine label, as well as obscene depictions and false claims of curative properties.
Writing a personal check for less than a buck is against the law.
Four varieties of noodles must be a certain size — or else.
Federal law mandates that Swiss cheese must have eyes that have “developed throughout the cheese.”
Here’s another crime, illustrated in the book:
I encountered a surprise on my morning walk. For years NYC has been making driving more and more difficult. On East 17th between Avenue X & W, a two-lane, one-way street, the difficulty of parking has been alleviated by a solution I’d seen suggested a couple of times in the letters to the editor column in the Post — perpendicular parking. I wonder if the neighbors got together to request it. Whatever. Kudos.
The rain held off , allowing the floating book shop to operate with no problem. My thanks to Michael, who bought two more paperback romances, and to the woman who purchased Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind by Alexandra Ripley and Stephens Mitchell; and to the gentleman who selected I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb; and to the gentleman who chose a book in Russian; and to the one who did a four-for-four swap of thrillers in Russian; and to the woman who donated a cache of children’s books in Russian.
