Oy Feh So?
There have been so many articles predicting California’s demise that I was completely shocked to read that the exact opposite is happening — it’s booming like no other place in the world except China, so much so that citizens will receive a tax rebate. And this despite the pandemic, wildfires, drought, heavy regulation and environmental restrictions. I have one question: why have so many left the state? Usually, money trumps social issues. Given the economy, it seems the push to recall Governor Newsom is misguided. I expect liberals to cite this repeatedly in their effort to transform America into their socialist ideal. They’d be crazy if they didn’t. Couple this and Benjamin Netanyahu’s ouster in Israel, and leftists should be ecstatic. Then again, nothing makes them happy.
RIP consummate actor New Beatty, 83. He began in regional theater, including his home state of Kentucky, and eventually landed on Broadway in The Great White Hope by Howard Sackler, which won the Tony for Best Play in 1969. He garnered rave reviews as the star of the L.A. theater production of The Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Italian playwright Dario Fo. Hollywood noticed. His first film was memorable — Deliverance (1972). From there he worked steadily, comfortable on the big or small screen. There are 165 titles under his name at IMDb. He did 33 episodes alone of Homicide: Life on the Street. He received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Network (1977), and two Emmy nods: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special — Last Train Home (1989) and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Special — Friendly Fire (1979). He appeared in Nashville (1975) and All the President’s Men (1976), which both received Best Picture Oscar nominations. He was outstanding as a judge losing his faculties on a 2008 episode of Law & Order titled Zero. He garnered rave reviews for his portrayal of Big Daddy in a London production of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Married four times, he is the father of eight. Well done, sir. Thank you. Here he is in character on L & O:
Mother nature provided a pause in the rain that enabled the floating book shop to operate. Thanks, ma’am, and also to The Quiet Man, who bought another satchel of DVDs; and to the woman who purchased For You, My Daughter: Poems That Say How Much I Love You by Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz; and to the one who took home a hardcover in Russian; and to Shelley, who was charmed by the kids book Oy, Feh, So? by Cary Fagan, illustrations by Gary Clement; and to Alice, who swapped a bunch of books she’d bought from me for Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse.
