Paradise Alley
RIP Kirstie Alley, 71, who succumbed to cancer. Born in Wichita, she was a high school cheerleader. Before she became an actress, she was an interior designer. In a fun bit of trivia, in 1979 she appeared on Match Game PM, winning $6000, and Password Plus, paired with Dick Martin, taking home $800. There are 76 titles, including a short to be released posthumously, under name at IMDb. That number is not a measure of her success, as she appeared in 148 episodes alone of Cheers and 67 of Veronica’s Closet. Her breakout role came in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Other career highlights include the twelve episodes of the two mid-’80’s North & South miniseries, the popular Look Who’s Talking (1989) and Look Who’s Talking Too (1990), Woody Allen’s Deconstructing Harry (1997), and two seasons competing on Dancing with the Stars. She won two Emmys: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Cheers (1991) and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special David’s Mother (1994). She was nominated for six others. In 2007 she donated $5 million to the Church of Scientology. She fought substance abuse and weight problems. She was a mom of two children adopted with former husband Parker Stevenson. Here’s a quote attributed to her about John Travolta: “Believe me, it took everything that I had inside, outside, whatever, to not run off and marry John and be with John for the rest of my life. He was the greatest love of my life.” Well done, Madam. Thank you.
Headline from nypost.com: “Meta threatens to remove all news from Facebook if bill passes Congress.” Wouldn’t bother me. I’m interested only in the posts of relatives, friends and acquaintances. There are plenty of better sites to get news.
This sounds like karma. NYP headline: “Ex-Florida congressman who lobbied on behalf of Venezuela arrested.” He was a Republican.
From NYP: “No, Iran didn’t ban morality police — it duped press, and Biden administration.” And me.
NYP: “‘Black hole’ MTA ‘should not be asking for more money,’ Rep. Malliotakis scolds.” Wanna bet they get it?
From an NYP editorial: “Since the 2020 election, Democrats beat Republicans by 9 percentage points [in] voting by mail.” I’m surprised the margin isn’t larger. I would’ve guessed 33%.
It was sprinkling when I went out to do the floating book shop this morning. I hung out a bit, expecting the rain to intensify. It stopped, and I decided to put out my entire Russian inventory and the most marketable English titles I wouldn’t have to dig deep into the car to get out. I was surprised the rain held off so long. I packed up only an hour short of a full session. My thanks to the lovely elderly lady library volunteers, who donated a hardcover in Russian, and to Sam, who purchased Barbra Streisand: Her Life by James Spada; and to Ira who bought How to Get Rich: One of the World’s Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets by Felix Dennis; and to The Quiet Man who took home A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and this illustrated gem:
