Past & Present

Here’s a great snippet from NY Post sports media critic Phil Mushnick’s column, supplied to him by a reader: “Saw a commercial today with Pat Boone hawking investing in silver. So I asked my wife if we should trust Pat Boone by investing in silver. She said, ‘Why not, if we’re gonna trust our health care to Joe Namath?’” Are all those Medicare commercials annoying or what?
Another night in Fun City included a guy with an unusual toy and cops busting an Astoria sex club named Caligula, where 80 people were gathered in violation of Corona restrictions. Three couples suffered coitus interruptus:
Episode ten of season two of Combat! aired last night on Heroes & Icons, channel 9–4 on OTA’s in NYC. It features two women of interesting backgrounds playing mother and daughter. The name Denise Darcel was very familiar. I was surprised she has only 14 acting credits, then noticed the “Self” category, which lists her many appearances on talk and variety shows. She made at least six appearances each with Milton Berle, Jack Paar, Arthur Murray and Mike Douglas. She did four episodes of Stump the Stars. She even hosted a quiz show in 1954 that didn’t last long, Gamble on Love, which focused on married couples. She also did stage work. Born in Paris, she passed away in L.A. at 86 in 2011. In the episode in question, her daughter was played by Holly McIntire, the daughter of Hollywood stalwarts Jeanette Nolan and John McIntire. There are ten titles under her name at IMDb, all popular TV series in the period from 1960-’65. Her second husband, Charles Wright, to whom she is still wed, served as Poet Laureate of the United States 2014-’15. He shared the National Book Award in 1983 for Country Music: Selected Early Poems, and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for Black Zodiac. He has had more than 20 books published and has earned other honors. Here’s a shot of Darcel’s character tending to Lt. Hanley, played by Rick Jason.
And here’s McIntire. I’m not certain that it’s from the episode in question, but my hunch is that it is:
My thanks to the lovely woman who bought three Nora Roberts translations in Russian, and to the little guy who greets me whenever he passes, who purchased a kids’ book; and to whoever left a valuable cache of about 30 books at my door.
