Phyllis & More
Fanatics have called for a day of global Jihad tomorrow. I don’t want to stay home, but I’m not sure I have the balls to defy potential terrorism. Then again, what’s to stop it from continuing all week or month? We may soon find out if terrorists have entered from the southern border.
RIP Phyllis Coates, 96, TV’s original Lois Lane on The Adventures of Superman. I am in the minority who prefer her hardnose approach to the role, although I also like Noell Neill, who originated the part in the 1948 serial starring Kirk Alyn. Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, Coates moved to California as a teen. She started in vaudeville and later toured with the USO. Her screen career spanned 1946-’96. There are 145 titles under her name at IMDb. She worked her way up from shorts to uncredited roles in mostly B movies before finding her true niche, TV, where she was a constant presence. Aside from 25 episodes of …Superman, she did 13 of The Duke, 39 of This Is Alice, seven of Death Valley Days, five of Faraway Hill, four of Professional Father and The Cisco Kid, three each of Gunsmoke, The Untouchables, The Lone Ranger, General Electric Theater and Perry Mason, and one or two guest shots on a host of other programs. Divorced after 24 years of marriage, she was a mom of one. I feel she should have been a big star. Still, well done. Thank you, Madam. Photo from Google Images:
Will this nypost.com headline surprise anyone? “US Students’ ACT Test Scores Drop to 30-Year Low.”
This bit of info about September won’t surprise those who shop. From NYP: “Wholesale Inflation Increases to 2.2 Percent.”
From NYP: “RFK Jr. Raises $11M Hours After Independent Announcement.” Shades of DT.
Excerpt from a newsmax.com article by Jim Thomas about the Feds suing eBay for selling certain devices: “Traditionally, ‘rolling coal’ has meant the illegal act of modifying, disabling, or tampering with a vehicle’s pre-installed emissions control systems in a diesel engine to augment the fuel intake, causing the vehicle to emit copious amounts of black or gray exhaust emissions. The darkness of these emissions stems from the incomplete combustion of the excess fuel… Many people who modify their engines in this manner often do so as a statement against environmentalism, intentionally disregarding eco-friendly practices in favor of expressing opposition to environmental concerns…” It’s not the kind of rebellion the left favors. If the emissions are as bad as it sounds, I wish these folks would stop.
Headline from foxnews.com: “Students hide identities with masks while praising Hamas’ massacre of Israelis.” I’d bet they do not want to land on a “Do Not Hire” list.
I’m still having PC problems. The device works half-assed five to eight AM, and slows to a crawl in the PM, which makes me wonder if the T-Mobile connection during that high traffic period is also at fault. I did my brief afternoon session in the library. I tried to hook up my new computer and discovered that it doesn’t have the proper portal for the TM wire — aargh! I will take it to Best Buy on Saturday, when rain is expected for the fourth straight week, and ask for guidance. Fortunately I’ve been visited by a story idea to help fill time. I’ve already banged out three-plus pages.
Not much action at the floating book on another gorgeous day. My thanks to Vitaly, who purchased The Next Accident by Lisa Gardener, and to my Constant Benefactress, who bought The Last Day by Glenn Kleier; and to the folks who stopped to chat.
