Positions

Here’s a new book especially appropriate for this day:

The fact that 13 House Republicans voted for the latest infrastructure fraud is proof the right should not be optimistic about the elections of 2022.

Iraq’s Prime Minister has survived an assassination attempt probably launched by Iran-backed Shiite’s unhappy with recent election results. Why is there so little news coming out of that country? Has life improved? Has America’s involvement, long regarded as a colossal failure, become a success or at least paved the way to a better future?

NY Post sports media critic Phil Mushnick ended his column with this winner: “Quote of the Week from Cordarrelle Patterson, who plays receiver, running back and returns kicks for the Falcons: ‘If my mom could go out there and work three jobs, I can go out there and play three positions.’” Kudos.

RIP NFL RB Tom Matte, who played his entire twelve-year career with Baltimore. He was an All-American QB at Ohio St., and was the Colts’ #1 pick in the first round of the 1961 draft, the seventh player selected. His stats are modest but he was a solid player, averaging just shy of four yards per carry. He was selected to the Pro Bowl twice, and led the league in TDs in 1969. He was a member of the 1968 NFL championship team that was upset in Super Bowl III by the Jets. His most memorable games came at the tail end of the 1965 season when both the legendary Johnny Unitas and his backup, Gary Cuozzo, suffered season ending injuries. Matte played QB, leading the team to a win in the final game of the season vs the Rams, then suffering a heartbreaking overtime loss in a playoff with the Packers. Head coach Don Shula put a list of plays on a wristband Matte wore. That item is on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After his playing days Matte put in time in the broadcast booth. Well done, sir. (Facts from Wiki)

Here’s the first line from a recent San Francisco Chronicle editorial: “Residents and city leaders are searching for answers: should they tolerate burglaries as a part of city living, and focus on barricading homes?…” Will that attitude eventually infect the rest of the country as well? Geez.

The change from Daylight Saving Time had me at the computer at 3:30 AM, filling time working on the Curious Sicilian book file. I finished the section on Michelle and added to the one on Laural. I initially expected each would be five pages at most. The former is twelve, the latter now 17. I don’t care if I’ve overdone it. Everything in them is fascinating to me and I can only hope it will be interesting to anyone who reads them. The file is now 77 pages. It will probably grow to 90 after I’ve added my experiences skydiving and bungee jumping, which I’ll get to after a bit of a break. It’s been so much fun, especially those instances I’d forgotten. I’m so happy I wrote it all down. I still doubt the file will grow to the 200 page target I’ve set for a print book, but there’s no reason I couldn’t publish it as an ebook and charge a dollar. There are a lot of notes I will sort through in the coming months, but I don’t anticipate finding much I haven’t already included in novels and short stories.

Another good session for the floating book shop. My thanks to the kind folks who made purchases: Here’s what sold: seven books in Russian, a book on diabetes; Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul by Jack Canfield, Kimberly Kirberger, and Mark Victor Hansen; Winter of the World by Ken Follett; The Big Book of Jewish Humor by William Novak & Moshe Waldoks; Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo; The Greenglass House by Kate Milford and Jaime Zollars; Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan; Clean Getaway by Nic Stone; and several other young adult titles.
