Potpourri
Since I’m almost always disappointed by crime fiction novels, I decided to go the short story route. People, including me, leave books in the lobby of our building for fellow tenants to enjoy. Recently, someone left four from the Akashic noir series covering the five boroughs of NYC. The only one missing was Brooklyn, which I read several years ago and have completely forgotten. I took the one on Manhattan, published in 2006, edited by the award-winning Lawrence Block, who contributed a story himself. The other names I recognized were Jeffery Deaver and John Lutz, whose novels I’ve sold but never read. I’m glad I got to sample their work, but I was not blown away by either or any of the 15 pieces the way I was by Ernest Hemingway’s The Killers or Flannery O’Connors A Good Man Is Hard to Find. The essence of those have stayed with me for decades. Still, I found all but one of the stories entertaining and well-written. Most readers would likely finish all but Deaver’s in a single sitting. 16 users at Amazon have rated Manhattan Noir, forging to a consensus of 4.1 on a scale of five. I’d say its appeal is restricted to fans of the genre.
So Bibi Netanyahu’ is finally out. He was the longest-serving PM is Israel’s history. Although I believe he made the world a better place, no one should hold power as long as he did. Best of luck to Benny Gantz, now in the hot seat. I always fear that some psychopath will smuggle a nuclear device into the country and destroy it. Then again, that would leave only America as the mullah’s scapegoat for their own incompetence.
Red Billy de Blasio has dropped out of the presidential race. How will we survive?
Here’s the pic of the day:
The Antonio Brown soap opera continues. The Patriots have released him following reports that he has tweeted a woman who accused him of sexual misconduct. Just when he had me convinced he had intelligently orchestrated his acquisition by New England, he does something incredibly stupid. As much as I hate to come to his defense, I’ll say it again — if he’s not indicted or in jail he has the right to work. While it’s nice to see something break against the Pats, I doubt it will derail their march to another Super Bowl.
My thanks to the woman who bought Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep, and to Ira, who purchased Paris in a Basket: Markets — The Food And The People by Nicolle Aimee Meyer & Amanda Pilar Smith; and to The Quiet Man, who loaded up on DVDs; and to the two women who each went home with a book in Russian; and to the gentleman who did a five for one swap of the same.
