Pros & a Con
RIP Baltimore Colts great linebacker Mike Curtis, 77. An academic All-American at Duke, he was selected in the first round of the 1965 draft. He was twice All-Pro and named to the Pro Bowl four times. With 59 seconds remaining and the score tied in Super Bowl V, he intercepted a pass that set up Jim O’Brien’s game-winning field goal. The annual NFL 101 Awards named him AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1970. The Seahawks selected him in the 1976 expansion draft, and he blocked a last second field goal that enabled the franchise’s first victory. The moment I will most remember is when he laid out a yahoo who’d come onto the field during a game against the Dolphins. In all, he played 14 seasons. In 1972 he published Keep Off My Turf, and he wrote the forward for The First 50 Super Bowls: How Football’s Championships Were Won by Ed Benkin. Well done, sir.
PGA superstar Brooks Koepka came up with an amusing line about playing without fans in attendance: “Guys are going to lose balls,” meaning there won’t be anyone but a few officials tracking shots, and balls are likely to disappear in deep rough out of their view.
Mike Bloomberg spent $1.2 billion on his failed bid to steal the Democratic nomination for the presidency. He’s donated millions to the Corona fight — to Africa. Is he snubbing America because of its lack of support for him?
It took three days to complete the first proofing of the novella on which I’m working. The word count has crept past 19,000. An avid reader would be able to finish it in one sitting, perhaps taking a break halfway. I doubt anyone would need more than three sittings to polish it off. It will grow very little from hereon. I will begin the next round tomorrow. After that’s completed I will engage the battle to add page numbers, always ridiculously difficult in MS Word. Then I’ll put the file aside for a while. Since the book is so short, it shouldn’t take long to get it ready to submit to Amazon. I won’t decide whether there will be a print edition until the last minute.
