Psychopaths, A Sociopath & A King

80 years ago today — “A Day of Infamy”:

Headline from nypost.com: “If cats were people, they’d probably be psychopaths, scientists say.”

Interesting stat in NYP editorial: “Of the $1 billion-plus donated in the 2020 federal election cycle, most, around $514 million, went toward electing Democrats,” per the watchdog OpenSecrets, vs. “roughly $200 million that helped Republicans.”

As I was channel hopping last night, I had the good fortune to come across a solid BBC thriller. Prey received a Best Mini-Series award in the UK. It shot only six episodes. I watched the last three, an arc, each less than 45 minutes. Kudos to WLIW for airing all three in one night. The plot was intriguing. A female prisoner feigns passing out and is taken to a hospital in the charge of a male guard. His pregnant daughter is kidnapped by the woman’s boyfriend. As most any parent would react, the recovery of his flesh and blood comes first, so he plays along, doesn’t contact police. The twist and turns of the chase are absorbing, although at times strain credulity. The cast is outstanding. Rosie Cavaliero stars as the middle age cop on the case. Born in Rio, there’s not much bio info on her, but she has an excellent career going, 102 titles beneath her name at IMDb. She looks like a real person, not like one of those glam or buffed cops one often sees in TV fare. Philip Glenister, as the dad, has also been prolific in Brit telly, 76 titles, including multiple appearances on many shows. MyAnna Buring, a Swede, is excellent as the soft-spoken, manipulative sociopath. She too is in the middle of an impressive run, 57 titles, including six appearances on the wildly popular Downton Abbey. I hope I get a chance to see the first three episodes, a separate arc. 3000+ users at IMDb have rated Prey, forging to a consensus of 7.1 on a scale of ten. It’s set in Manchester, England England, as the song from Hair goes (Galt McDermott, James Rado, Gerome Ragni). Here are Glenister and Buring in character, handcuffed to each other:

Par for the course Windy City headline from foxnews.com: “Chicago police cancel days off for officers following violent weekend.”

Unusually, there was no wind along Avenue Z today, which allowed the floating book shop to operate despite the temperature hovering around 40. My thanks to the kind folks who donated and bought stuff. Here’s what sold: six books in Russian, four DVDs; two cook books; a pictorial on Tutankhamen; another titled Liberty; Target Patton: The Plot to Assassinate General George S. Patton by Robert K. Wilcox; and two works of non-fiction by Philip Keith: Fire Base Illingworth: An Epic True Story of Remarkable Courage Against Staggering Odds, and Blackhorse Riders: A Desperate Last Stand, an Extraordinary Rescue Mission, and the Vietnam Battle America Forgot.
