Quotable
So is the corona virus a lethal threat to healthy individuals? Wish I knew. It’s sad to see the matter politicized, but that’s what slimeballs do. Here are some quotes on people in office, my comments in parentheses:
“Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.” Will Rogers (Ironically, never more true than in this age of political correctness.)
“90% of the politicians give the other 10% a bad reputation.” Henry Kissinger (He may have underestimated.)
“Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.” Mark Twain (In deference to equal time, none will be cited for fear of leaving someone out.)
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.” Groucho Marx (Despite the USA’s unbelievably generous social safety net, many pols look for more alleged ills to throw money at.)
“Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it.” Mark Twain (Mostly the latter. If these people had any real talent, they would be applying it elsewhere.)
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Abraham Lincoln (Paging Mr. Biden.)
“Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.” Ronald Reagan (Amen, Dutch.)
“My choice early in life was between whether to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there’s hardly any difference.” Harry S. Truman (My all-time favorite quote on the subject. I wonder what HST would think of the modern Democratic party.)
“All politics is loco.” Howard Ogden (Great word play on the old bromide.)
“An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought.” Simon Cameron (Great news for Bloomberg.)
“Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks.” Doug Larson (Right on, sir.)
“98% of the adults in this country are decent, hard-working Americans. It’s the other lousy 2% that get all the publicity. But then, we elected them.” Lily Tomlin (Most folks believe it’s the representatives of other areas who screw up, not their own.)
I’ll leave the last word to Mr. Clemens:
Is this headline an indicator for the November election? “Fox News hits all-time prime time ratings high.”
I received the second proof copy of Open Outcries, the reboot of Exchanges. In scanning it to make sure all the corrections I’d made were in place, I discovered two errors I’m not going to correct: going’, and double quotation marks. It’s simply not worth another round of proofing for a book whose earning potential is negligible. The corrections will be in the Kindle version. I’m waiting for approval from Amazon before submitting the electronic version.
After being curtailed yesterday, the floating book shop was rained out today. I miss not doing it.
