Remember When?
Cue Astrid Gilberto: “Tall and tan and young and lovely…” (Antonio Carlos Jobim, English lyrics by Norman Gimbe). Rio, Ipanema beach, photo by Bruna Prado/AP, posted at theguardian.com. It’s summer in the southern hemisphere:
This should make leftists happy. Headline from nypost.com: “Holy Moly: 7 NYC Catholic schools announce in past month alone they are closing — as experts blame skyrocketing tuition, loss of religion.” Each month during my early education days, mid to late ’50s, my mom would tuck three bucks into one of those little envelopes that years later would be used for nickel bags — eons ago it seems.
From NYP: “Asian group tired of far-left Dems urges Andrew Cuomo to run for mayor: ‘Most common-sense candidate’.” Don’t they know Andy Boy is responsible for congestion pricing, no bail no jail, and Covid tyranny? Or don’t they care?
I didn’t watch the show, but this sounds funny. From NYP: “Steve Martin opens ‘SNL’ 50th special with hilarious monologue featuring Canadian Martin Short dragged away by ICE.” I hope folks post highlights on youtube. Photo from Google Images from when I was able to stay awake for the entire show:
From NYP: “Grand return: JPMorgan’s new NYC HQ boasts lux amenities to lure workers back to office: ‘I’m still not down’.” Are the leaders afraid to fire those who refuse to comply? Remember how many people were fired for not getting vaxxed?
You’ve got to be kidding. From NYP: “US election observer charged with felony after refusing to wear mask during 2024 presidential count.” Felony? Some still cling to Covid tyranny.
Quick — smelling salt. Headline from newsmax.com: “Hochul Approves Increased Natural Gas Pumping.” What brought about this bit of common sense from Governor Hokum?
From NM: “Army Calling for AI Robots to Build Bridges Amid Combat.” Makes sense, and it’s great fodder for sci-fi writers.
Government 101. Headline from foxnews.com: “Millions of Americans listed between ages 100 and 159 in critical US database, Musk says.” Remember when the left was for transparency? What changed?
A solid argument can be made that the Iraq War was a success. Here’s the latest evidence. From FN: “Iraqi activists seek to oust Iranian influence, normalize ties with surprising nation.” Israel.
From FN: “Stray Cats frontman Brian Setzer’s autoimmune disease has left him unable to play guitar.” Speedy recovery, Sir. He’s one of my favorites.
From an FN article by Adam Shaw, in my own words: Illegal immigrant encounters at the southern border are down to 229 per day from a high of 11,000 under Quid Pro Joe.
It was Plan C today for the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. With the wind fierce I tried out a new spot a couple of blocks away, at the side of a failed marijuana shop. My main worry was the owner showing up to showcase the property and telling me to beat it. Since he didn’t, I may go back tomorrow when the temperature is supposed to be lower, but the wind scaled back. My thanks to the woman who bought First Earth Encyclopedia: A First Reference Guide to the Geographic World, and a hardcover in Russian; and to the one who purchased New Fix-it-yourself Manual by Reader’s Digest and Natural Cures & Gentle Medicines That Work Better Than Dangerous Drugs or Risky Surgery by Frank W. Cawood.
