Remembrance
Today at the corner of East 13th and Avenue Z there was a ceremony honoring first responder George Atsaves, who passed away from 9/11-related illness. I did not recognize the name but I recognized his face immediately at the website of Marine Park Funeral Home, Inc.. He owned the house next door to the co-op building in which I live. We passed hundreds of times. I may have never even spoken to him. I frequently saw him in conversation with others. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Appropriately, the block has been named in his honor. Rest in Peace, Sir. Photo from Google Images:
Earlier this week Michael Lavin, the husband of my niece Tanya’s best friend, succumbed to the same illness. Both men were in their early sixties. Here are Susan (Suky) and Michael, photo from Facebook:
And here’s a shot I took today:

I learned a new word, highlighted in a foxnews.com article by Madeline Coggins: “Spaving” which “… encourages them (consumers) to essentially waste money to buy more than it’s necessary, just so that they feel like, okay, now I’m getting the deal.”
The phrase is overused but exists for a reason — You can’t make this stuff up! Headline from FN: “Texas crime victims liaison pleads guilty to human smuggling with county vehicle.”
I find myself feeling sorry for Joe Biden for the harsh reception or indifference gets from the public. I must remember that no politician will ever surpass the lies he has told, and that he has been peddling influence to the tune of billions for decades, and that he has as bad a record on race as any elected official ever.
A pleasant, breezy day, perfect for curbside business. My thanks to the woman who bought Bette and Joan: The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine, and to the gentleman who purchased Tales of Terror: 58 Short Stories Chosen by the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock; and to the young musician who took home a CD by jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour; and to the man who overcompensated me for Billy Budd by Herman Melville, an entry in the A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket aka Daniel Handler, and Cold Paradise by Stuart Woods; and to the Cookbook Lady, who added The Frugal Gourmet by Jeff Smith to her vast collection; and to the woman who selected the gigantic Techniques of Healthy Cooking by The Culinary Institute of America.
