Samfundssind
From an article at nypost.com, in my own words: Danish has crept into the American lexicon. I missed this one from last year: “hygge,” which encompasses all things cozy and comforting. Now comes “samfundssind.” “Say that three times fast,” as Sonny Fox would ask on Wonderama. (“Six thick thistle sticks.”) It’s defined as “putting the concern of society higher than one’s own interests.” More loosely translated, it’s “community spirit” or “social mindedness.” What’s the Danish term for MAGA?
From an NYP editorial, edited by yours truly: “…the president’s “targeted regulatory relief and financial incentives stimulated an unprecedented private-sector response to the pandemic…” Crucially, Operation Warp Speed is compressing the usual new-vaccine implementation time from over ten years to a matter of months, and states that heeded Trump’s advice to reopen quickly “have seen proportionally fewer deaths from COVID-19 and have brought millions more Americans back to work than those that proceeded more slowly.” The only way I’d get the vaccine is if it’s free and I don’t have to wait on line. I find it hilarious that some won’t take it because it may come on Trump’s watch — as if he, not established firms, were cooking it up himself.
From an article at foxnews.com, edited by YT: By 10/15 Democrat registrants had cast 51% of all early ballots compared to 25% from Republicans. By Sunday the margin had narrowed to 51% to 31%. That’s still a big gap and the main reason I believe Biden will win. I fear many Trump ballots will disappear, and many dead people will vote for Biden. One thing the President has going for him is Obama’s abysmal track record in campaigning for anyone but himself. He, Biden and Harris attract only a handful of folks at their stops, while Trump’s rallies are attended by thousand. There is no enthusiasm for “Middle Class” Joe among liberals. They are motivated by hatred of the president, who has exposed the incompetence and corruption of the swamp, Republicans as well as Democrats… On the lighter side of the election fight, an NYPD officer has been suspended for blaring “Trump 2020” over a patrol-car loudspeaker. LOL.
Aides working with NJ Governor Murphy, VP Mike Pence and Kamala Harris have contracted the virus. Were they wearing masks?
This is both sad and funny, from an article at FN, edited by YT: The New Hampshire Union Leader, one of the nation’s most prominent conservative-leaning newspapers, has endorsed Joe Biden. Like “conservatives in theory only” George Will and Bill Kristol, the paper is endorsing socialism rather than a president who has governed more conservatively than any since Ronald Reagan. The NY Post has endorsed Trump.
Here’s an interesting FN headline: “Professor claims referring to famous composers by just their last names is White supremacy.” He’s at UMass Amherst.
I haven’t seen every episode of Star Trek The Next Generation, but what I’ve seen I’ve liked a lot. Last night I caught Devil’s Due, season four, episode 13, first aired in 1991. It features an actress with whom I was completely unfamiliar, Marta DuBois, as a con artist. She was great, utterly charming, and seemed to be having great fun playing the role. There are 61 titles under her name at IMDb, mostly in TV. She co-starred in 22 episodes of Tales of the Gold Monkey, which ran in ‘81-’82; and appeared in six episodes of Magnum, P.I., even marrying the protagonist; and did ten McBride mystery TV movies with John Larroquette. I was saddened to learn she succumbed to a stroke at 65 in 2018. Here she is in character:
And here’s a conventional look:
