Mount Rainier, Washington, Trevor Anderson Photography, posted at photographytalk.com:

RIP MLB manager extraordinaire Whitey Herzog, 92, who also had a modest playing career. Signed by the Yankees, he was traded to the Senators in 1956. A lefty outfielder, he also played for the A’s, Orioles and Tigers, his on-field career ending in Detroit in ’63. Overall, he batted .257 and had 25 homers. He then served as a scout for a couple of years. He drew attention during a six-year tenure as director of player development for the Mets, who advanced to the World Series in ’69 and ’73. When he was not named manager after the death of Gil Hodges, he perceived it as a snub. His first managerial stint was disastrous. He was fired by the Rangers late in his second season. His second was successful. Under his leadership, the Royals won three straight AL west titles, ‘76-’78. The team finished second in ’79, and a clash with the owner sent Herzog packing. His greatest success came in St. Louis, where he managed from ‘80-’90, winning a World Series in ’82 and NL pennants in ’85 and ’87. A two-year stint as GM of the Angels, ‘93-’94, was not successful. In 18 seasons he won 1281 games, which ranks him 39th all-time. He is a member of both the Hall of Fame and the Cardinals’ Hall of Fame. His number 24 was retired by the Cards. Married to his high school sweetheart, he was a father of three. He was as good a strategist as there ever was. Well done, Sir. Photo from Google Images:

Opening line from a nypost.com article by Oswald Feliz: “New York City is suffering a retail catastrophe, with 11.2% of storefronts empty — nearly twice the 6% of 2019.” The rate should be declining post-Covid. The biggest factor is shoplifting, which is essentially legal up to $1000 worth.

Amusing caption on a foxnews.com photo: NPR — National Public Ridicule. Brought on by itself.

From FN: “Democrats who called for ICE to be abolished mum during Biden presidency.” All colleges should be teaching a course on how to make selective outrage appear virtuous. Maybe they already are.

From FN: “FBI director warns Chinese hackers are preparing to ‘physically wreak havoc’ on US.” He finally caught on that totalitarians are the enemy.

From FN, return of a useful idiot: “Susan Sarandon joins anti-Israel protest at Columbia University months after being dropped by talent agency.” Would she look good in a burqa?

Gary Varvel cartoon:

The forecast was right on the money: rain stopping by ten AM, breaks in the clouds. It was fine for selling stuff curbside. My thanks to Alice, who bought The Partner by John Grisham, and to the woman who purchased two novels in Russian; and to the one who selected a kids’ book in that language and a massive lo-cal cookbook; and to Marty, retired NYPD, who had nice to say about Coincidence, although he pointed out an error. A law enforcement officer, even one retired who may have put a man’s life in danger, would not give the guy a Glock, which requires training to fire. In Killing he pointed out that a .38 has no safety. Oh, well.
