Correction: A few days ago I did an obit on Valerie Harper, who died in 2019. Duh! Sorry. My thanks to Miss Connoli for pointing out the error. Mistakes are happening way too often in my life lately, fortunately minor and only annoying. I have to be smarter.

Paris book festival: the Great Dictation, photo by Emmanuel Dunand/AFP/Getty Images, posted at theguardian.com:

RIP MLB pitcher Fritz Peterson, 82. Born in Illinois, he gave up hockey to concentrate on baseball. He played two years at Northern Illionois U before signing with the Yankees in ’63. He made his big-league debut in April ’66. He was successful despite the Bronx Bombers being in one of the worst periods in team history. He had a winning record in six of his eight seasons in New York, including a stellar 20–11, 2.90 ERA in ’70, earning his only All-Star nod. In ‘73 Peterson and teammate Mike Kekich swapped families, a shocking move at the time, one that worked for Peterson but failed for his friend. He was traded to Cleveland, for whom he went 23–25 in two seasons-plus. He was booed by fans everywhere. I doubt such an issue would cause more than ripple these days. He was traded to Texas, where injuries ended his career. Overall, he was 133–131, ERA 3.30. He had the lowest ratio of walks per innings pitched of any left-hander since the ’20s. After retiring, he did a little broadcasting and worked as a blackjack dealer. He wrote three books. He was a father of five, three kids with his second wife, to whom he remained married till the end. Well done, Sir.

Cock-a-doodle-do, headline from nypost.com: “Noisy pet rooster ruffles feathers in the Hamptons with pre-dawn crowing — with one resident reporting it as ‘harassment’.” Oh, the trials and tribulations of the well-to-do.

Kudos to Trump for backing House speaker Johnson. Although I align with the views of the hardline Republicans undermining the Speaker, they are a minority with little influence and need to back down… Side bar: Among the many celebrations of April 13th, it’s Unfairly Prosecuted Persons Day.

Headline from foxnews.com: “Collaboration brewing between Elon Musk and Argentina’s ‘anarcho-capitalist’ president.” May the force be with you, gentlemen.

The madness continues. From FN: “Crisis in California: Surge in migrant boat landings brings ‘chaos’ to seaside communities.” Invasion USA.

Not much action at the Anti-Inflation Book Shop on this gloomy, blustery day. My thanks to my Constant Benefactress, who insisted on paying for Frankenstein: A Cultural History by Susan Tyler Hitchcock despite donating a couple of items.
