Shaw Enough
Headline from CNBC: “US housing starts soar 16.9% in December to a 13-year high.” The good news sent the three major indices to record closes.
Sign of the times in more ways than one, from a headline at foxnews.com: “Pornhub sued by deaf man over adult video site’s alleged lack of subtitles.” Remember way back in the day when boys were told a certain practice would cause blindness. Fortunately, most of us are able to read subtitles.
It was 23 degrees when I left the apartment. As has so often happened, the area in front of my alternate site, a Chase bank, was sheltered from the strong wind. Bundled under seven layers, I basked in the sunshine. My thanks to the young woman who bought a crossword puzzle book, and to the 76-year-old one who could easily pass for 65, who purchased Irwin Shaw’s The Young Lions, which was adapted to the screen by Edward Anhalt under the same title in 1958, and starred Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin, and directed by Edward Dymtryk. Shaw was born Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff in the South Bronx in 1913. His family moved to Brooklyn, where he graduated from James Madison High School and Brooklyn College, where he played football, which must have provided inspiration for one of his most famous short stories, The Eighty-Yard Run. He was prolific, publishing 12 novels, ten plays, 15 screenplays, three works of non-fiction, and many short stories (facts from Wiki). He served in legendary director George Stevens’ film crew during WWII. In 1951 he was blacklisted and moved to Europe. It didn’t slow him down. Completed in 1970, Rich Man, Poor Man was adapted into a highly successful miniseries, the third most watched show of the ‘75-’76 season. It , starred Nick Nolte, Peter Strauss and Susan Blakely, and received 23 Emmy nominations. Shaw received several literary awards himself on his life’s journey, including the prestigious O Henry for short story writing. He passed away at 71 in 1984.
