Short Takes

Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Craig Counsell was not happy with home plate umpire Mike Estabrook’s calls yesterday, which led to this confrontation and his ejection.

A highway in Colorado was closed yesterday — for good reason:

The early returns for NYC mayor Red Billy de Blasio’s Vision Zero traffic strategy were good. Now they’ve taken a turn for the worse. Fatalities are up 22% so far in 2019. At first I was sure lowering the speed limit to 25 wouldn’t make a bit of difference, as speedsters would ignore it. Then it looked like I was proven wrong. I guess the next step is lowering the limit to 20, or banning all cars except those of politicians and government workers.

It will be interesting to see how the mainstream media spins President Trump’s declassification of documents regarding the Russia collusion hoax. The evidence seems to point all the way up to Obama. The division will remain, the news will continue to be ugly. And no matter who is in power in the near future — and possibly long term — the nation will not heal. The differences are too stark. Fortunately, it seems Trump has proven America can prosper despite the divide. Then again, there is the massive deficit and debt, which the swamp is happy to enlarge.

As everyone knows, Facebook is censoring certain posts. Some of it is unjustified, probably done by algorithms that cannot distinguish nuances. One aspect that has not been addressed by its hierarchy is friend requests from young women promoting nude photographs. I’ve had five in the last week. I don’t object to these, as they aren’t forced on one. It’s just that I view FB as a PG area to promote my books and to remain in contact with family, friends and acquaintances. I know where to find such pics.

RIP Bart Starr, 85, legendary field general of the Packers dynasty. A 17th-round draft choice, he was the first QB to win five championships. He was named MVP of the first two Super Bowls, and league MVP in 1966. He was named to four pro bowls and to the NFL All Decade team. He was Green Bay’s head coach for nine seasons, but did not fare well, his record 52–76–3, 1–1 in the playoffs. The Bart Starr Award is given annually to an NFL player of outstanding character. Well done, sir. (Facts from Wiki)

Business was very slow at the floating book shop on this beautiful summer-like day until the final hour. My thanks to Monse, who returned and purchased CD collections of Elton John and Cirque du Soleil; and to the gentleman who bought a four CD collection of Billy Joel; and to the woman who selected Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing by Caroline Myss; and to Mr. Conspiracy who chose a book on grilling and barbecuing; and to Tom, who went home with an early Elton John collection and a huge collection of short stories, and The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy. He said he spent 12 years in prison and did a lot of reading and tutoring of other inmates. In my years selling stuff on the street, he’s at least the fourth guy to tell me he’s been in jail. I see two others regularly. I try to act naturally, but it conjures an eerie feeling in me, even though it appears the men have reformed.
