Side by Side, Poles Apart
Okay, top this headline in today’s news, from nypost.com: “Man caught by police after hiding inside giant teddy bear.”
Valuable info from an NYP article by Brooke Kato. There are code words a woman in a bar man can use if she senses trouble. Order an “Angel Shot.”
An NYP editorial speculating on whether there is a there there regarding the raid on Mar a Lago quotes Matt Taibbi: “…American version of the Tonton Macoute.” Huh? It “was a special operations unit within the Haitian paramilitary force created in 1959 by dictator François ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier.” A “mythological bogeyman, Tonton Macoute (Uncle Gunnysack), kidnaps and punishes unruly children by snaring them in a gunny sack (macoute) before carrying them off to be consumed for breakfast.” On the one hand, I’m grateful to have learned something. On the other, find a less obscure comparison, sir.
How can this be? Headline from newsmax.com: “US Talent Shortage Threatens Long-Term Economic Drag.” SMH. Is it the result of the dumbing down of the education system?
Another gem from the Staten Island goombah:
After the heat of the past few weeks, it was refreshing to walk in this morning’s rain. The skies cleared and the sidewalk dried in time for the opening of the book shop. My thanks to the Middle Eastern gentleman who I believe was being charitable rather than interested in reading, who overcompensated me for a couple of titles; and to Ira, who brought me a bottle of water; and to Alice, who dropped off a paperback. Here’s what sold: Naked, personal essays by David Sedaris; The Rooster Bar by John Grisham; Irresistible Forces by Danielle Steel; Gandhi the Man: How One Man Changed Himself to Change the World by Eknath Easwaran; Stalin: The First In-depth Biography Based on Explosive New Documents from Russia’s Secret Archives by Edvard Radzinsky; Killer Instinct by Joseph Finder; Lightning by Dean Koontz; Brazen Virtue by Nora Roberts; and a book in Russian. I am blessed.
