Six Weeks Later…
Here are excerpts from an article at foxnews.com: “Election officials in New York finally declared winners late Tuesday in two congressional elections that were held back on June 23rd, but were mired by thousands of missing and uncounted mail-in ballots… A total of 13,000 mail-in votes were tossed out for various reasons, including missing signatures or incorrect postmarks.” Remember the Bush-Gore election fiasco? That may look smooth compared to this November. Given that this local election involved 60,000 or so votes, it’s not hard to imagine the votes for the presidential election will be counted into 2021. That’s one way to keep Trump in office.
A friend’s Facebook post informed me of the passing of a director who had a significant career. Born in London in 1944, Alan Parker was highly successful in advertising before turning to movies. He was nominated twice for an Oscar: Midnight Express (1978), which I have mixed feelings about these days, although I was riveted on initial viewing; and Mississippi Burning (1988), which I would not watch when I learned it took liberties with the truth. But I love Fame (1980) and the bizarre, ludicrous Angel Heart (1980). Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) has its moments. The Commitments (1991) is fun, as is Bugsy Malone (1976). Birdy (1984) is interesting, different. Evita (1996) made no impression me. I don’t like Shoot the Moon (1982) but admire its uncompromising nature regarding a relationship gone ugly. I haven’t seen Angela’s Ashes (1999) or The Road to Wellville (1994). There are 26 titles under Parker’s name at IMDb, several of them music videos. He also has ten writing credits. His work entertained millions. He passed away at 76 on July 31st. Well done, sir. Thank you.
It was one of those rare sessions of the floating book shop where it resembled a real business. My thanks to Wolf, who returned to buy the rest of the CDs by Russian music artists, 30 or so, and to the kind folks who bought across a wide spectrum of fiction and non; and to Angelo and his pride and joy, Robbie Blox, a Lego maven who has his own youtube channel devoted to the craft. His dad purchased Vito’s Day and Killing.
