Headline from nypost.com: “KFC drops ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’ slogan amid COVID-19 fears.” Advertisers and politicians operate as if they believe the majority of people are stupid.

From a foxnews.com article, edited by yours truly: A 55-year-old bottle of Yamazaki whisky, the oldest Japanese whisky in history, sold for a world record price of $795,000 at an auction in Hong Kong. Ah salute.

Is this anyway to win voters? FN headline: “Black Lives Matter protesters in DC seen berating diners, demanding they raise their fists, in viral videos.” And it appears most are white! WGS is on a par with TDS.

Again, the presumption of innocence does not apply to police officers, and the response to the shooting is rioting, looting and killing.

I’m about one-quarter through a short story compilation published by The Paris Review. Although well-written, none have really captured me. I did enjoy the following bit from When She Is Old and I Am Famous by Julie Orringer. It takes place in Italy and involves American cousins in their early 20’s, one a successful model, the other an aspiring artist from whose point of view the tale is told. Their relationship is strained. The artist hates even the model’s name — Aida, which she describes as “two cries of pain and one of stupidity” — Ai-ee-duh. Kudos. My mom often doubled up the Ais when she was hurting— Ai-Ai.

I always put the Russian books out first and take them in last. The strategy worked like a charm today. My thanks to the woman who bought a nine volume set of Pushkin as I was setting up the display, and the gentleman who purchased two hardcover thrillers while I was breaking it down; and to Ira, who chose 1001 Dreams: An Illustrated Guide to Dreams and Their Meanings by Jack Altman; and to the young woman who selected Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly; and to the elderly Latina, who opted for Extreme Measures by Michael Palmer; and to the woman who went home with a book in Russian that was not in good condition; and to Mike and my constant benefactress, who donated a bunch of titles between them.
