Somewhere…
I hope this is a good omen for our troubled world: Perch Lighthouse in the Clyde at Port Glasgow, photo by Jane Barlow/PA, posted at theguardian.com:
Here are some fun facts about Valentine’s Day gleaned from history.com, edited by yours truly:
Every year thousands of romantics send letters addressed to Verona, Italy to Juliet of Romeo and Juliet. … those that reach the city are answered by a team of volunteers from the Juliet Club. Each Valentine’s Day the club awards the Cara Giulietta prize to the author of the most touching love letter.
The tradition of giving a box of candy was started in the 19th century by Richard Cadbury. Not Hershey?
During the Victoria Era, those who didn’t want the attention of certain suitors would anonymously send “vinegar valentines.” These cards, also called penny dreadfuls, were comically insulting, rejecting unwanted admirers. They were later used to target suffragettes. “Wham bam, thank you ma’am.” (Suffragette City, David Bowie)
Here are terms I’ve recently come across, definitions garnered from a Google search:
Technosexuality is a sexual orientation accepted by some individuals whose sexual desires are associated with technology. Some technosexuals prefer technology to human sexual relations.
Robot fetishism (also ASFR, technosexuality, robophilia and robosexuality) is attraction to humanoid robots, also to people acting like robots or people dressed in robot costumes.
Is the loss of the Long Island congressional seat previously held by George Lopez a bad omen for those who wish to halt the dominance of progressives? I’m afraid so. As I’ve said many times, the left won the battle for America a long time ago. It has suffered setbacks but come back strong every time, relentless. Politics is the lifeblood of liberals, 24/7/365. Rank and file Republicans, the people, not the politicians, are otherwise engaged. I hope I’m wrong.
Given the unfriendly wind on this otherwise beautiful day, I didn’t expect much business at the Anti-Inflation Book Shop, and that was the case. Still, it was better than staying home, even though I spent almost the entire session in the car.
