RIP Bronx-born MLB stalwart Rocky Colavito, 91. The youngest of five children, he dropped out of high school after his sophomore year to pursue semi-pro ball. He was signed by the Indians in ’51, had a “cup of coffee” in September ’55, and became a fixture in July of ’56. His career lasted until ’68. His first five seasons were with Cleveland. He also played for the Tigers, A’s, Indians again, the White Sox, Dodgers and Yankees. A nine-time All-Star, he led the AL in homers in ’59 (42) and RBIs in ’65 (108). He hit four consecutive dingers in a game in ’59. He was the first outfielder in AL history to complete a season without making an error. His throwing arm was legendary. In ’58 he pitched 2/3 of an inning without being scored upon for the Indians. On August 25th ’68 he pitched 2 2⁄3 scoreless innings against the league leading Tigers, and was credited with the win for the Yankees. In all, he batted .266 and socked 374 homers. In 1999 Sportswriter Terry Pluto published The Curse of Rocky Colavito, which explained why the Indians had not come within even eleven games of first place since 1959. He attributed it to the foolish trade of Colavito at the height of his career. After he retired, Colavito did some broadcasting for the Indians, and also worked as a coach for them and for the Royals. He is a member of the Cleveland Hall of Fame. Married since ’54, he was a father of three. Bravo, Goombah. Facts from Wiki, photo from Google Images:
RIP actor Michael Cole, 84. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, he grew up in grandmother’s house and was drinking by 12. He was a divorced father of two at 20. Living in L.A., a chance meeting with renowned acting coach Estelle Harman changed his life. She gave him free lessons and let him sleep on a bed on the stage of her workshop. There are 40 titles under his name at IMBd, a figure that doesn’t do justice to the breadth his career. He was in 123 episodes alone of The Mod Squad, 64 of General Hospital, and he made numerous appearances on popular primetime fare, screen career spanning 1961–2010. He also did some big screen work, most notably in Mr. Brooks (2007), and some stage work. He achieved sobriety in the early ’90s. Here’s a quote attributed to him: “Courage is fear that’s said its prayers.” His second marriage lasted from ’94 until his passing. Photo from Amazon:
Wasn’t Obamacare supposed to fix all problems?
Headline from a Rich Lowry op-ed piece: “Trump must resist lawfare — to let success be his best revenge.” I agree.
Headline from nypost.com: “Poking around: Disgraced ex-lawmaker Anthony Weiner officially files to run for NY City Council years after sexting scandal.” He isn’t qualified for anything but politics.
Desperation. From NYP: “Gov. Hochul’s $500 ‘inflation refund’ plan is just fool’s gold for votes.” Look at it this way, it’s transparent governance.
Headline from foxnews.com: “Pope Francis calls on nations to admit migrants, says they ‘must be welcomed’.” The Vatican should be able to house many.
The Anti-Inflation Book Shop was rained out.
